अट्ठासी हजार ऋषियों को सम्बोधित करते हुए सूतजी ने कहा - ""हे विप्रो! प्राचीन काल की बात है। महान राजा मान्धाता ने वशिष्ठजी से पूछा- 'हे वशिष्ठजी! यदि आप मुझ पर प्रसन्न हैं तो ऐसे व्रत का विधान बताने की कृपा करें, जिससे मेरा कल्याण हो।'
भगवान श्री नारायण के बहुत ही मधुर भजन: ॐ जय जगदीश
महर्षि वशिष्ठजी ने कहा - 'हे राजन! सब व्रतों से उत्तम और अंत में मोक्ष देने वाला आमलकी एकादशी का व्रत है।'
राजा मान्धाता ने कहा - 'हे ऋषिश्रेष्ठ! इस आमलकी एकादशी के व्रत की उत्पत्ति कैसे हुई? इस व्रत के करने का क्या विधान है? हे वेदों के ज्ञाता! कृपा कर यह सब वृत्तांत मुझे विस्तारपूर्वक बताएं।' भगवान श्री नारायण के बहुत ही मधुर भजन: ॐ जय जगदीश हरे
महर्षि वशिष्ठ ने कहा - हे राजन! मैं तुम्हारे समक्ष विस्तार से इस व्रत का वृत्तांत कहता हूँ- यह व्रत फाल्गुन मास के शुक्ल पक्ष में होता है। इस व्रत के फल के सभी पाप समूल नष्ट हो जाते हैं। इस व्रत का पुण्य एक हजार गौदान के फल के बराबर है। आमलकी (आंवले) की महत्ता उसके गुणों के अतिरिक्त इस बात में भी है कि इसकी उत्पत्ति भगवान विष्णु के श्रीमुख से हुई है। अब मैं आपको एक पौराणिक कथा सुनाता हूँ। ध्यानपूर्वक श्रवण करो- भगवान श्री नारायण के बहुत ही मधुर भजन: रट ले हरी का नाम
प्राचीन समय में वैदिक नामक एक नगर था। उस नगर में ब्राह्मण, वैश्य, क्षत्रिय, शूद्र, चारों वर्ण के लोग प्रसन्ततापूर्वक रहते थे। नगर में सदैव वेदध्वनि गूंजा करती थी।
उस नगरी में कोई भी पापी, दुराचारी, नास्तिक आदि न था। भगवान श्री नारायण के बहुत ही मधुर भजन: जब भक्त नहीं होंगे भगवान कहाँ होगा
उस नगर में चैत्ररथ नामक चन्द्रवंशी राजा राज्य करता था। वह उच्चकोटि का विद्वान तथा धार्मिक प्रवृत्ति का व्यक्ति था, उसके राज्य में कोई भी गरीब नहीं था और न ही कंजूस। उस राज्य के सभी लोग विष्णु-भक्त थे। वहां के छोटे-बड़े सभी निवासी प्रत्येक एकादशी का उपवास करते थे। भगवान श्री नारायण के बहुत ही मधुर भजन: सुबह सवेरे लेकर तेरा नाम प्रभु
एक बार फाल्गुन माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की आमलकी नामक एकादशी आई। उस दिन राजा और प्रत्येक प्रजाजन, वृद्ध से बालक तक ने आनंदपूर्वक उस एकादशी को उपवास किया। राजा अपनी प्रजा के साथ मंदिर में आकर कलश स्थापित करके तथा धूप, दीप, नैवेद्य, पंचरत्न, छत्र आदि से धात्री का पूजन करने लगा। वे सब धात्री की इस प्रकार स्तुति करने लगे - 'हे धात्री! आप ब्रह्म स्वरूपा हैं। आप ब्रह्माजी द्वारा उत्पन्न हो और सभी पापों को नष्ट करने वाली हैं, आपको नमस्कार है। आप मेरा अर्घ्य स्वीकार करो। आप श्रीरामचन्द्रजी के द्वारा सम्मानित हैं, मैं आपसे प्रार्थना करता हूँ, मेरे सभी पापों का हरण करो।'
भगवान श्री नारायण के बहुत ही मधुर भजन: हर साँस में हो सुमिरन तेरा
उस मंदिर में रात को सभी ने जागरण किया। रात के समय उस जगह एक बहेलिया आया। वह महापापी तथा दुराचारी था।
अपने कुटुंब का पालन वह जीव हिंसा करके करता था। वह भूख-प्यास से अत्यंत व्याकुल था, कुष्ठ भोजन पाने की इच्छा से वह मंदिर के एक कोने में बैठ गया। भगवान श्री नारायण के बहुत ही मधुर भजन: लगन तुमसे लगा बैठे जो होगा देखा जाएगा
उस जगह बैठकर वह भगवान विष्णु की कथा तथा एकादशी माहात्म्य सुनने लगा। इस प्रकार उस बहेलिए ने सारी रात अन्य लोगों के साथ जागरण कर व्यतीत की। प्रातःकाल सभी लोग अपने-अपने निवास पर चले गए। इसी प्रकार वह बहेलिया भी अपने घर चला गया और वहां जाकर भोजन किया। भगवान श्री नारायण के बहुत ही मधुर भजन: अब सौंप दिया इस जीवन का
कुछ समय बीतने के पश्चात उस बहेलिए की मृत्यु हो गई।
उसने जीव हिंसा की थी, इस कारण हालांकि वह घोर नरक का भागी था, परंतु उस दिन आमलकी एकादशी का व्रत तथा जागरण के प्रभाव से उसने राजा विदुरथ के यहां जन्म लिया। उसका नाम वसुरथ रखा गया। बड़ा होने पर वह चतुरंगिणी सेना सहित तथा धन-धान्य से युक्त होकर दस सहस्र ग्रामों का संचालन करने लगा। भगवान श्री नारायण के बहुत ही मधुर भजन: तूने अजब रचा भगवान
वह तेज में सूर्य के समान, कांति में चन्द्रमा के समान, वीरता में भगवान विष्णु के समान तथा क्षमा में पृथ्वी के समान था। वह अत्यंत धार्मिक, सत्यवादी, कर्मवीर और विष्णु-भक्त था। वह प्रजा का समान भाव से पालन करता था। दान देना उसका नित्य का कर्म था। भगवान श्री नारायण के बहुत ही मधुर भजन: भगवान मेरी नैया उस पार लगा देना
एक बार राजा वसुरथ शिकार खेलने के लिए गया। दैवयोग से वन में वह रास्ता भटक गया और दिशा का ज्ञान न होने के कारण उसी वन में एक वृक्ष के नीचे सो गया। कुष्ठ समय पश्चात पहाड़ी डाकू वहां आए और राजा को अकेला देखकर 'मारो-मारो' चिल्लाते हुए राजा वसुरथ की ओर दौड़े। वह डाकू कहने लगे कि इस दुष्ट राजा ने हमारे माता-पिता, पुत्र-पौत्र आदि समस्त सम्बंधियों को मारा है तथा देश से निकाल दिया। अब हमें इसे मारकर अपने अपमान का बदला लेना चाहिए।
भगवान श्री नारायण के बहुत ही मधुर भजन: हरी बोल हरी बोल
इतना कह वे डाकू राजा को मारने लगे और उस पर अस्त्र-शस्त्र का प्रहार करने लगे। उन डाकुओं के अस्त्र-शस्त्र राजा के शरीर पर लगते ही नष्ट हो जाते और राजा को पुष्पों के समान प्रतीत होते। कुछ देर बाद प्रभु इच्छा से उन डाकुओं के अस्त्र-शस्त्र उन्हीं पर प्रहार करने लगे, जिससे वे सभी मूर्च्छित हो गए। भगवान श्री नारायण के बहुत ही मधुर भजन: श्री हरि स्तोत्रम्
उसी समय राजा के शरीर से एक दिव्य देवी प्रकट हुई। वह देवी अत्यंत सुंदर थी तथा सुंदर वस्त्रों तथा आभूषणों से अलंकृत थी। उसकी भृकुटी टेढ़ी थी। उसकी आंखों से क्रोध की भीषण लपटें निकल रही थीं। भगवान श्री नारायण के बहुत ही मधुर भजन: तेरे द्वार खड़ा भगवान
उस समय वह काल के समान प्रतीत हो रही थी। उसने देखते-ही-देखते उन सभी डाकुओं का समूल नाश कर दिया।
नींद से जागने पर राजा ने वहां अनेक डाकुओं को मृत देखा। वह सोचने लगा किसने इन्हें मारा? इस वन में कौन मेरा हितैषी रहता है?
राजा वसुरथ ऐसा विचार कर ही रहा था कि तभी आकाशवाणी हुई- 'हे राजन! इस संसार मे भगवान विष्णु के अतिरिक्त तेरी रक्षा कौन कर सकता है!' भगवान श्री नारायण के बहुत ही मधुर भजन: भजमन नारायण नारायण
इस आकाशवाणी को सुनकर राजा ने भगवान विष्णु को स्मरण कर उन्हें प्रणाम किया, फिर अपने नगर को वापस आ गया और सुखपूर्वक राज्य करने लगा। भगवान श्री नारायण के बहुत ही मधुर भजन: चलो विष्णु धाम
महर्षि वशिष्ठ ने कहा- 'हे राजन! यह सब आमलकी एकादशी के व्रत का प्रभाव था, जो मनुष्य एक भी आमलकी एकादशी का व्रत करता है, वह प्रत्येक कार्य में सफल होता है और अंत में वैकुंठ धाम को पाता है'।""

कथा-सार
भगवान श्रीहरि की शक्ति हमारे सभी कष्टों को हरती है। यह मनुष्य की ही नहीं, अपितु देवताओं की रक्षा में भी पूर्णतया समर्थ है। इसी शक्ति के बल से भगवान विष्णु ने मधु-कैटभ नाम के राक्षसों का संहार किया था। इसी शक्ति से उत्पन्ना एकादशी बनकर मुर नामक असुर का वध करके देवताओं के कष्ट को हरकर उन्हें सुखी किया था।"

All the sins of the fruit of this fast are completely destroyed. The virtue of this fast is equal to the fruit of one thousand cow's donation. Apart from its properties, the importance of Amalaki (Gooseberry) lies in the fact that it originated from the mouth of Lord Vishnu. In ancient times there was a city named Vaidik. Brahmins, Vaishyas, Kshatriyas, Shudras, people of all four castes lived happily in that city. The sound of the Vedas always resounded in the city.

A Chandravanshi king named Chaitrarath used to rule in that city. He was a scholar of high order and a person of religious inclination, no one was poor nor stingy in his kingdom. Once the Ekadashi named Amalaki of Shukla Paksha of Phalgun month came. On that day the king and every citizen, from old to child, happily observed fast on that Ekadashi. The king came to the temple with his subjects and started worshiping Dhatri with incense, lamp, naivedya, pancharatna, umbrella etc. after setting up the urn. They all started praising Dhatri in this way - 'O Dhatri! You are Brahma Swaroopa. Salutations to you, born of Brahmaji and the destroyer of all sins. You accept my prayer. Everyone kept vigil in that temple at night. At night a fowler came to that place. He was a great sinner and a miscreant.

Sitting at that place, he started listening to the story of Lord Vishnu and the greatness of Ekadashi. In this way that fowler spent the whole night keeping vigil along with other people. After some time, that fowler died.
He had committed animal violence, because of this, although he was a part of the severe hell, but on that day, due to the fast of Amalaki Ekadashi and the effect of Jagran, he was born at the place of King Vidurath. He was named Vasurath. When he grew up, he started running ten thousand villages with Chaturangini army and equipped with money and grains. He was equal to the sun in brightness, equal to the moon in brightness, equal to Lord Vishnu in valor and equal to the earth in forgiveness. Once King Vasurath went for hunting. Due to chance, he lost his way in the forest and due to lack of knowledge of the direction, he slept under a tree in the same forest. After the leprosy time the hill bandits came there and seeing the king alone, ran towards King Vasurath shouting 'Maro-Maro'. Those dacoits started saying that this evil king has killed our parents, sons and grandsons etc. and all our relatives and expelled them from the country. Now we must avenge our insult by killing it. Saying this, the dacoits started killing the king and started attacking him with weapons. The weapons of those dacoits would be destroyed as soon as they hit the king's body and would appear like flowers to the king. At that time she seemed like Kaal. He destroyed all those dacoits in no time.

King Vasurath was thinking like this that only then there was a voice in the sky - ' Hey Rajan! Who can protect you in this world except Lord Vishnu!'
