अनंत चतुर्दशी व्रत कथा
बहुत समय पहले सुमंत नाम का एक ब्राह्मण था। वह बहुत ही नेक और तपस्वी भी था। उसने दीक्षा नाम की औरत से विवाह किया था और दोनों को सुशीला नाम की एक पुत्री भी थी। उनकी पुत्री सुशीला बहुत ही रूपवान थी, जो अपने पिता की ही तरह धार्मिक भी थी, लेकिन सुशीला जब थोड़ी बड़ी हुई, तो उसकी मां दीक्षा परलोक सिधार गई।

पत्नी दीक्षा की मृत्यु होने के कुछ समय बाद उस ब्राह्मण ने कर्कशा नाम की एक महिला से विवाह कर लिया। इसके कुछ समय बाद जब पुत्री सुशीला विवाह योग्य हुई, तो उसका विवाह कौंडिन्य ऋषि के साथ कर दिया। विवाह में विदाई के समय जब ब्राह्मण ने अपनी दूसरी पत्नी कर्कशा से बेटी और दामाद को कुछ देने के लिए कहा, तो वह नाराज हो गई। कर्कशा ने गुस्से में दामाद को ईंट और पत्थर देकर विदा कर दिया।

कर्कशा के इस व्यवहार से कौंडिन्य ऋषि काफी दुखी हुए। वे अपनी पत्नी सुशीला के साथ आश्रम जाने लगें, लेकिन आश्रम के रास्ते में ही रात हो गई। रात होने के कारण दोनों एक नदी के किनारे पर रूक गए।
इसी दौरान सुशीला ने देखा कि नदी के किनारे कुछ स्त्रियां सुंदर कपड़ों में सजी हुई हैं, वे किसी देवता की पूजा भी कर रही थीं।
सुशीला उन स्त्रियों के पास गई, तो उन्होंने बताया कि वे अनंत व्रत की पूजा कर रही हैं और उन्होंने उस पूजा की महत्ता के बारे में भी बताया।

उन स्त्रियों की बात सुनकर सुशीला ने भी उसी समय उस व्रत को करने का मन बनाया और चौदह गांठों वाला डोरा भी हाथ में बांध कर वापस ऋषि कौंडिन्य के पास चली आई।
जब ऋषि कौंडिन्य ने सुशीला से उस डोरे के बारे में पूछा, तो सुशीला ने उन्हें सारी बात बता दी। इस पर गुस्सा होते हुए ऋषि कौंडिन्य ने सुशीला के हाथों से उस डोरे को खोलकर तोड़ दिया और उसे आग में जला दिया। उनके ऐसा करने पर भगवान अनंत जी नाराज हो गएं।

इसकी वजह से ऋषि कौंडिन्य की सारी संपत्ति खत्म हो गई और वह कुछ ही समय में बहुत गरीब हो गएं। इससे ऋषि कौंडिन्य बहुत ही दुखी रहने लगे। एक दिन उन्होंने अपनी इस गरीबी के बारे में अपनी पत्नी सुशीला से पूछा, तो सुशीला ने बताया कि यह भगवान अनंत का अपमान करने के कारण हो रहा है। उन्हें वह डोरा भी नहीं जलाना चाहिए था।
पत्नी सुशीला की बात सुनकर ऋषि कौंडिन्य को अपनी गलती का एहसास हो गया। इसका पश्चाताप करने के लिए वे तुरंत उसी जंगल में गए और अनंत डोरे की खोज करने लगें। कई दिनों तक वह जंगल में भटके, लेकिन उन्हें अनंत डोरा नहीं मिला। एक दिन जंगल में वो बेहोश होकर गिर गएं।

तभी उसके सामने भगवान अनंत प्रकट हुए। उन्होंने ऋषि कौंडिन्य से कहा – “हे कौंडिन्य, तुमने अंजाने में ही सही, लेकिन मेरा अपमान किया था। उसी की वजह से तुम्हें ये सारे दुख झेलने पड़े हैं। अब तुमने अपनी उस गलती का पश्चाताप कर लिया है, इसलिए मैं तुमसे बहुत प्रसन्न हूं। मैं तुम्हें वरदान भी देता हूं कि जब तुम घर जाकर पूरे विधि-विधान से मेरा अनंत व्रत करोगे, तो अगले चौदह सालों में तुम्हारे सारे कष्ट दूर हो जाएंगे। तुम हर तरह के सुख से संपन्न हो जाओगे। ‘”
भगवान अनंत की बात सुनकर ऋषि कौंडिन्य घर गए और विधिविधान से अनंत व्रत करते हुए भगवान अनंत की पूजा की। कुछ समय बाद धीरे-धीरे उनके सारे कष्ट दूर हो गए।

Meanwhile, Sushila saw that some women were dressed in beautiful clothes on the banks of the river, they were also worshiping some deity.
When Sushila went to those women, they told that they were worshiping Anant Vrat and also told about the importance of that worship.

After listening to those women, Sushila also made up her mind to observe that fast at the same time and tied a thread with fourteen knots in her hand and returned to Rishi Kaundinya.
When Rishi Kaundinya asked Sushila about that thread, Sushila told him the whole thing. Getting angry on this, Rishi Kaundinya untied the thread from Sushila's hands and broke it and burnt it in the fire. Lord Anant ji got angry on his doing this.

Due to this all the wealth of Rishi Kaundinya was lost and he became very poor in no time. Rishi Kaundinya started feeling very sad because of this. One day he asked his wife Sushila about his poverty, and Sushila told that it was happening because of insulting Lord Anant. They should not have burnt that thread also.
Sage Kaundinya realized his mistake after listening to his wife Sushila. To repent for this, he immediately went to the same forest and started searching for the eternal thread. For many days he wandered in the forest, but he could not find Anant Dora. One day he fell unconscious in the forest.

Only then Lord Anant appeared in front of him. He said to Rishi Kaundinya – “O Kaundinya, you had insulted me unknowingly. Because of that you have to bear all these miseries. I also give you a boon that when you go home and do my infinite fast with all the rules and regulations, then all your troubles will go away in the next fourteen years. You will be endowed with all kinds of happiness. ,
After listening to Lord Anant, Rishi Kaundinya went home and worshiped Lord Anant by observing Anant Vrat according to the rules and regulations. After some time, gradually all his sufferings went away.
