भगवान शिव को पंचानन क्यों कहा जाता है?
कहा जाता है कि श्रृष्टि की रचना के लिए भगवान शिव ने पांच मुख धारण किया था। शिव के पांच मुख से जल, वायु, अग्नि, आकाश और पृथ्वी की उत्पति हुई। वहीं पंचानन का अर्थ होता है पांच मुख वाले।
भगवान शिव की कृपा और महिमा से ही पृथ्वी पर जीवन है। शिवजी ने ही पृथ्वी पर जीवन की उत्पत्ति की। दरअसल जब श्रृष्टि की उत्पत्ति हुई थी तब मानव जीवन के लिए कुछ भी नहीं था। फिर भगवान शिव ने श्रृष्टि की रचना और जीवन के लिए पांच मुख धारण किए। इसलिए भी उन्हें पंचमुखी या पंचानन कहा जाता है। शिव के पांच मुख से जल, वायु, अग्नि, आकाश और पृथ्वी जैसे पांच तत्वों की उत्पत्ति हुई। शास्त्रों में ऐसा कहा जाता है कि जगत के कल्याण के लिए भगवान शिव ने कई अवतार भी लिए।

क्यों कहते हैं शिवजी को पंचानन
पंच यानी पांच और आनन यानी मुख। इसका अर्थ है पांच मुख वाले भगवान शिव। भगवान शिव के पांच मुख में अघोर, सद्योजात, तत्पुरुष, वामदेव और ईशान हैं। इसलिए उन्हें पंचानन या पंचमुखी कहा जाता है। शिवजी के इन सभी मुख में तीन नेत्र भी हैं, जिस कारण उनके कई नामों में एक नाम त्रिनेत्रधारी भी है।
भगवान शिव के पंचानन रूप की कथा
पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, एक बार भगवान श्री हरि विष्णु ने मनोहर किशोर रूप धारण किया। उन्हें इस अत्यंत मनोहर रूप को देखने के लिए चतुरानन ब्रह्मा, बहुमुख वाले अनंत आदि सभी देवतागण आए। उन्होंने भगवान के रूपमाधुर्य का अधिक आनंद लिया और प्रशंसा की। ये देख शिवजी सोचने लगे कि यदि मेरे भी अनेक मुख और नेत्र होंगे तो मैं भी भगवान के इस किशोर रूप का सबसे अधिक दर्शन करता। शिवजी के मन में यह इच्छा जागृत हुई और उन्होंने पंचमुख व पंचानन रूप ले लिया।
Why is Lord Shiva called Panchanan?
It is said that Lord Shiva assumed five faces to create the universe. Water, air, fire, sky and earth originated from the five faces of Shiva. Whereas Panchanan means having five faces.
There is life on earth only by the grace and glory of Lord Shiva. Shivji only originated life on earth. Actually when the universe was originated then there was nothing for human life. Then Lord Shiva assumed five faces for the creation and life of the universe. That's why he is also called Panchmukhi or Panchanan. The five elements like water, air, fire, sky and earth originated from the five faces of Shiva. It is said in the scriptures that Lord Shiva also took many incarnations for the welfare of the world.

Why is Shivji called Panchanan
Pancha means five and Anan means mouth. It means Lord Shiva with five faces. The five faces of Lord Shiva are Aghor, Sadyojat, Tatpurush, Vamdev and Ishaan. That's why he is called Panchanan or Panchmukhi. Shivji also has three eyes in all these faces, due to which one of his many names is called Trinetradhari.
Story of five forms of Lord Shiva
According to legend, once Lord Sri Hari Vishnu assumed the form of a handsome teenager. Chaturanan Brahma, multi-faced Anant etc. all the gods came to see him in this very beautiful form. He enjoyed and praised the beauty of the Lord more. Seeing this, Shivji started thinking that if I too had many faces and eyes, I too would have seen this teenage form of God the most. This desire awakened in Lord Shiva's mind and he took the form of Panchmukh and Panchanan.
