भगवान विष्णु जी की उत्पत्ति।
जिस समय चारों तरफ सिर्फ अंधेरा हीं अंधेरा था; न सूर्य दिखायी देते थे न चंद्रमा, ग्रह-नक्षत्रों का भी कहीं पता नहीं था; न दिन होता था न रात। अग्नि, जल, वायु और पृथ्वी का भी नामोनिशान नहीं था- उस समय एकमात्र सत ब्रह्म अर्थात सदाशिव की ही सत्ता विद्ध्मान थी, जो अनादि और चिन्मय कही जाती थी उन्हीं भगवान सदाशिव को वेद, पुराण और उपनिषद् तथा संत महात्मा आदि ईश्वर तथा सर्वलोकमहेश्वर कहते हैं।

एक बार भगवान शिव के मन में सृष्टि रचने की इच्छा हुई। उन्होंने सोचा की मैं एक से अनेक हो जाऊँ। यह विचार आते ही सबसे पहले परमेश्वर शिव ने अपनी परा शक्ति अम्बिका को प्रकट किया तथा उनसे कहा की हमें सृष्टि के लिए किसी दूसरे पुरुष का सृजन करना चाहिए, जिसके कंधे पर सृष्टि संचालन का महान भार रखकर हम आनन्द पूर्वक विचरण कर सकें। ऐसा निश्चय कर के भगवान शिव ने पूरी शक्ति से अपने बाएँ अंग के दसवें भाग पर अमृत मल दिया। वहाँ से उसी समय एक दिव्य पुरुष प्रकट हुआ। उसका सौंदर्य अतुलनीय था। उसमे सत्वगुण की प्रधानता थी। वह परम शांत तथा अथाह सागर की तरह गंभीर था। रेशमी पीताम्बर से उनके अंग की शोभा दोगुनी हो रही थी। उनके चार हाथों में शंख, चक्र, गदा और कमल सुशोभित हो रहे थे।
उस दिव्य पुरुष ने भगवान शिव को प्रणाम करके कहा कि ‘भगवन! मेरा नाम निश्चित कीजिये और काम बताइये।’ उनकी बातें सुनकर भगवान शंकर ने मुस्करा कर कहा- ‘वत्स! व्यापक होने के कारण तुम्हारा नाम विष्णु होगा। सृष्टि का पालन करना तुम्हारा कार्य होगा। इस समय तुम उत्तम तप करो।’
इस भजन से मिलती है कष्टों से मुक्ति: तूने अजब रचा भगवान
भगवान शिव का आदेश प्राप्त कर श्री विष्णु जी कठोर तपस्या करने लगे। उस तपस्या कि ऊर्जा से उनके अंगों से जल कि धाराएँ निकलने लगीं, जिससे सूना आकाश भर गया। अंतत: उन्होने थककर उसी जल में शयन किया। जल अर्थात ‘नार’ में शयन करने के कारण हीं श्री विष्णु का एक नाम ‘नारायण’ हुआ।

That divine man bowed down to Lord Shiva and said, 'Lord! Fix my name and tell me the work. ' After listening to his words, Lord Shankar smiled and said - ' Vats! Because of your extensiveness, your name wiil be Vishnu. Your task will be to follow the universe. At this time you do the best penance.

After receiving the orders of Lord Shiva, Shri Vishnu ji started doing severe penance. With the energy of that penance, streams of water started coming out of his organs, which filled the empty sky. Ultimately, he got tired and slept in the same water. Because of sleeping in water i.e. 'Nara', Shri Vishnu got one name 'Narayan'.
