भगवान विष्णु का बुद्ध अवतार
धर्म ग्रंथों के अनुसार बौद्धधर्म के प्रवर्तक गौतम बुद्ध भी भगवान विष्णु के ही अवतार थे परंतु पुराणों में वर्णित भगवान बुद्धदेव का जन्म गया के समीप कीकट में हुआ बताया गया है और उनके पिता का नाम अजन बताया गया है। यह प्रसंग पुराण वर्णित बुद्धावतार का ही है।

एक समय दैत्यों की शक्ति बहुत बढ़ गई। देवता भी उनके भय से भागने लगे। राज्य की कामना से दैत्यों ने देवराज इन्द्र से पूछा कि हमारा साम्राज्य स्थिर रहे, इसका उपाय क्या है। तब इन्द्र ने शुद्ध भाव से बताया कि सुस्थिर शासन के लिए यज्ञ एवं वेदविहित आचरण आवश्यक है। तब दैत्य वैदिक आचरण एवं महायज्ञ करने लगे, जिससे उनकी शक्ति और बढऩे लगी। तब सभी देवता भगवान विष्णु के पास गए। तब भगवान विष्णु ने देवताओं के हित के लिए बुद्ध का रूप धारण किया। उनके हाथ में मार्जनी थी और वे मार्ग को बुहारते हुए चलते थे।

इस प्रकार भगवान बुद्ध दैत्यों के पास पहुंचे और उन्हें उपदेश दिया कि यज्ञ करना पाप है। यज्ञ से जीव हिंसा होती है। यज्ञ की अग्नि से कितने ही प्राणी भस्म हो जाते हैं। भगवान बुद्ध के उपदेश से दैत्य प्रभावित हुए। उन्होंने यज्ञ व वैदिक आचरण करना छोड़ दिया। इसके कारण उनकी शक्ति कम हो गई और देवताओं ने उन पर हमला कर अपना राज्य पुन: प्राप्त कर लिया।

Once upon a time the power of demons increased a lot. Even the gods started running away from their fear. With the desire of the kingdom, the demons asked Devraj Indra that what is the solution for our kingdom to be stable. Then Indra told in a pure sense that for a stable government, Yagya and Vedic conduct are necessary. Then the demons started performing Vedic practices and Mahayagya, due to which their power started increasing further. Then all the deities went to Lord Vishnu. Then Lord Vishnu assumed the form of Buddha for the benefit of the gods. He had a broom in his hand and used to walk sweeping the road.

Thus Lord Buddha approached the demons and preached to them that it was a sin to perform Yagya. Yajna causes violence to living beings. Many living beings are destroyed by the fire of Yagya. The demons were impressed by the teachings of Lord Buddha. He stopped performing Yagya and Vedic rituals. Due to this his power decreased and the gods attacked him and regained their kingdom.
