चंद्र की उत्पत्ति कैसे हुई
पुराणों के अनुसार ब्रह्मा ने अपने मानस पुत्र अत्रि को सृष्टि का विस्तार करने की आज्ञा दी। महर्षि अत्रि ने अनुत्तर नाम का तप आरंभ किया। तप काल में एक दिन महर्षि के नेत्रों से जल की कुछ बूंदें टपक पड़ी जो बहुत प्रकाशमय थीं। दिशाओं ने स्त्री रूप में आकर पुत्र प्राप्ति की कामना से उन बूंदों को ग्रहण कर लिया जो उनके उदर में गर्भ रूप में स्थित हो गया। परंतु उस प्रकाशमान गर्भ को दिशाएं धारण न रख सकीं और त्याग दिया।
उस त्यागे हुए गर्भ को ब्रह्मा ने पुरुष रूप दिया जो चंद्रमा के नाम से प्रख्यात हुए। देवताओं, ऋषियों व गंधर्वों आदि ने उनकी स्तुति की। उनके ही तेज से पृथ्वी पर दिव्य औषधियां उत्पन्न हुई। ब्रह्मा जी ने चंद्र को नक्षत्र, वनस्पतियों, ब्राह्मण व तप का स्वामी नियुक्त किया।
स्कंद पुराण के अनुसार जब देवों तथा दैत्यों ने क्षीर सागर का मंथन किया था तो उस में से चौदह रत्न निकले थे। चंद्रमा उन्हीं चौदह रत्नों में से एक है जिसे लोक कल्याण हेतु, उसी मंथन से प्राप्त कालकूट विष को पी जाने वाले भगवान शंकर ने अपने मस्तक पर धारण कर लिया। पर ग्रह के रूप में चंद्र की उपस्थिति मंथन से पूर्व भी सिद्ध होती है।
स्कंद पुराण के ही माहेश्वर खंड में गर्गाचार्य ने समुद्र मंथन का मुहूर्त निकालते हुए देवों को कहा कि इस समय सभी ग्रह अनुकूल हैं। चंद्रमा से गुरु का शुभ योग है। तुम्हारे कार्य की सिद्धि के लिए चंद्र बल उत्तम है। यह गोमंत मुहूर्त तुम्हें विजय देने वाला है।
अतः यह संभव है कि चंद्रमा के विभिन्न अंशों का जन्म विभिन्न कालों में हुआ हो। चंद्र का विवाह दक्ष प्रजापति की नक्षत्र रूपी 27 कन्याओं से हुआ जिनसे अनेक प्रतिभाशाली पुत्र हुए। इन्हीं 27 नक्षत्रों के भोग से एक चंद्र मास पूर्ण होता है।
How did the moon originate?
According to Purana,Brahma ordered his Manas son Atri to expand the universe. Maharishi Atri started the penance named Anuttar. One day during the period of penance, a few drops of water dripped from Maharishi's eyes which were very luminous. The directions came in the form of a woman and with the desire to have a son, accepted those drops which became situated in the form of a womb in her abdomen. But the directions could not hold that bright womb and abandoned it.
That abandoned womb was given a male form by Brahma who became famous by the name of Moon. Gods, sages and Gandharvas etc. praised him. Divine medicines were produced on earth from his glory. Brahma ji appointed Chandra as the master of constellations, flora, Brahmin and penance.
According to the Skanda Purana, when the gods and demons churned the ocean of milk, fourteen gems came out of it. The moon is one of those fourteen gems, which Lord Shankar, who drank the Kalkut poison obtained from the same churning, wore on his head for the welfare of the people. But the presence of the moon in the form of a planet is proved even before the churning.
In the Maheshwar Khand of Skanda Purana itself, Gargacharya told the gods that all the planets are favorable at this time, taking out the auspicious time of churning of the ocean. Jupiter has auspicious yoga with Moon. Lunar power is best for the accomplishment of your work. This Gomant Muhurta is going to give you victory.
So it is possible that different parts of the Moon were born at different times. Chandra was married to 27 girls in the form of constellations of Daksh Prajapati, from whom many talented sons were born. One lunar month is completed by the enjoyment of these 27 constellations.
