देवी काली भगवान शिव की पत्नी पार्वती का अवतार हैं। इस अवतार का उद्देश्य भयंकर राक्षस रक्तबीज को नष्ट करना था। भगवान ब्रह्मा द्वारा एक अद्वितीय वरदान प्राप्त करने के बाद उन्हें इस नाम से जाना गया। इस वरदान के अनुसार यदि उसके शरीर से रक्त की एक बूंद जमीन पर गिर जाए तो उससे एक हजार गुना अधिक शक्तिशाली इतने सारे रक्तबीज पुनर्जन्म ले सकते हैं। इस प्रकार थोड़े ही समय में युद्ध के मैदान में लाखों समान राक्षस होंगे। इस असाधारण लाभ ने उन्हें देवी-देवताओं, ऋषियों, संतों और पुरुषों पर अत्याचार करने के लिए प्रेरित किया। उनकी असहनीय गड़बड़ी ने अन्य देवताओं और संतों को देवी पार्वती से मदद लेने के लिए मजबूर किया, जिन्हें शाश्वत ऊर्जा का दिव्य रूप माना जाता है। इस प्रकार उसने देवी काली मां के रूप में प्रकट होकर ब्रह्मांड को बचाने का फैसला किया।

देवी काली का रंग अत्यधिक काला था जबकि उनकी आंखें लाल थीं। उसने अपने गले में मानव खोपड़ियों की एक माला पहन रखी थी और एक कमरबंद जिसमें से असंख्य मानव अंग टूटे हुए थे। काली के माथे पर तीसरी आँख और अत्यधिक उलझे हुए आलीशान बालों ने उसके भयानक चरित्र को और बढ़ा दिया। उसके लंबे दाँत नुकीले और आठ भुजाओं वाले दिखाई देते थे। उसे अपने ऊपरी बाएँ हाथ में खून से सनी तलवार और निचले बाएँ हाथ में एक राक्षस का कटा हुआ सिर पकड़े हुए दिखाया गया है। ऊपरी दाहिने हाथ से वह अपने भक्तों को शरण प्रदान करती हैं। इस प्रकार काली में रक्तबीज की शक्तियों पर काबू पाने की अद्वितीय क्षमता थी|

युद्ध के मैदान में देवी काली विशाल और भयंकर रूप में प्रकट हुईं जिससे राक्षस भयभीत हो गया। उसने अपने वाहक शेर के समर्थन से उसके खिलाफ मजबूती से लड़ाई लड़ी। पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, देवी काली ने अपने भाले से रक्तबीज पर वार किया और फिर अपनी विशाल जीभ से बने हुए घावों का सारा रक्त पी लिया। इस प्रकार उसने रक्तबीज को उसके अपने रक्त की बूंदों से पुनर्जन्म होने से रोका। यह सब कुछ। उसकी आक्रामकता को शांत करने के लिए, अन्य देवताओं ने भगवान महादेव की मदद मांगी, जिन्होंने स्वयं उनके पैरों के नीचे लेटकर एक विकल्प सुझाया। जब देवी काली को पता चला कि उन्होंने अपने पति को अपने पैरों से छुआ है, तो उनके सभी क्रूर व्यवहार गायब हो गए।

Goddess Kali is the embodiment of Parvathi, the consort of Lord Shiva. The intention of this incarnation was to destroy the fierce demon Raktabija. He came to know by this name after he was blessed with a unique boon by Lord Brahma. As per this boon, if a drop of blood from his body was fallen on the ground, one thousand times more powerful so many Raktabija could take rebirth from that. Thus within a short span of time there would be millions of similar demons on the battle field. This exceptional advantage persuaded him to torture gods and goddess, sages, saints and men. His unbearable disturbances forced other gods and sages to seek help from Goddess Parvati who is considered as the divine manifestation of eternal energy. Thus she decided to rescue the Universe by her appearance as Goddess Kali Maa.

The complexion of Goddess Kali was extreme dark whereas her eyes reddish. She had worn a garland of human skulls around her neck and a waist belt from which hanged numerous dismantled human limbs. The third eye on Kali’s forehead and the highly tangled luxurious hair increased her terrifying character. Her long teeth were sharp and seen with eight arms. She is depicted as holding a blood smeared sword in her upper left hand and a severed head of a demon in her lower left hand. With the upper right hand she offers refuge to her devotees. Thus Kali was with unique capacity to overcome the powers of Raktabija.

Battle With Raktabija
In the battle field Goddess Kali appeared in gigantic and fierce form which made the demon to get frightened. She fought against him vigorously with the support of her carrier lion. As per legend, Goddess Kali stabbed Raktabija with her spear and then with her enormous tongue drank the whole blood from the wounds created. Thus she prevented the rebirth of Raktabija from his own blood drops. This everything. To cool down her aggressiveness, other Gods sought the help of Lord Mahadeva who suggested an alternative by himself lying down under her feet. When Goddess Kali came to know that she touched her husband with her feet, all her ferocious behaviors vanished.
