देवशयनी एकादशी व्रत कथा
अर्जुन ने कहा- ""हे श्रीकृष्ण! आषाढ़ माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी का क्या व्रत है? उस दिन किस देवता का पूजन होता है? उसका क्या विधान है? कृपा कर यह सब विस्तारपूर्वक बतायें।""
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा- ""हे धनुर्धर! एक बार नारदजी ने ब्रह्माजी से यही प्रश्न पूछा था। तब ब्रह्माजी ने कहा कि नारद! तुमने कलियुग में प्राणिमात्र के उद्धार के लिए सबसे श्रेष्ठ प्रश्न पूछा है, क्योंकि एकादशी का व्रत सब व्रतों में उत्तम होता है। इसके व्रत से सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं। इस एकादशी का नाम देवशयनी एकादशी है। यह व्रत करने से भगवान विष्णु प्रसन्न होते हैं। इस सम्बन्ध में मैं तुम्हें एक पौराणिक कथा सुनाता हूँ, ध्यानपूर्वक श्रवण करो- मान्धाता नाम का एक सूर्यवंशी राजा था। वह सत्यवादी, महान तपस्वी और चक्रवर्ती था। वह अपनी प्रजा का पालन सन्तान की तरह करता था। उसकी सारी प्रजा धन-धान्य से परिपूर्ण थी और सुखपूर्वक जीवन-यापन कर रही थी। उसके राज्य में कभी अकाल नहीं पड़ता था। कभी किसी प्रकार की प्राकृतिक आपदा नहीं आती थी, परन्तु न जाने उससे देव क्यों रूष्ट हो गये। न मालूम राजा से क्या भूल हो गई कि एक बार उसके राज्य में जबरदस्त अकाल पड़ गया और प्रजा अन्न की कमी के कारण अत्यन्त दुखी रहने लगी। राज्य में यज्ञ होने बन्द हो गए। अकाल से पीड़ित प्रजा एक दिन दुखी होकर राजा के पास जाकर प्रार्थना करने लगी- 'हे राजन! समस्त संसार की सृष्टि का मुख्य आधार वर्षा है। इसी वर्षा के अभाव से राज्य में अकाल पड़ गया है और अकाल से प्रजा मर रही है। हे भूपति! आप कोई ऐसा जतन कीजिये, जिससे हम लोगों का कष्ट दूर हो सके। यदि जल्द ही अकाल से मुक्ति न मिली तो विवश होकर प्रजा को किसी दूसरे राज्य में शरण लेनी पड़ेगी।'
बाबा खाटू श्याम का सबसे मीठा भजन: उसे आना पड़ेगा खाटू में दुबारा
प्रजाजनों की बात सुन राजा ने कहा- 'आप लोग सत्य कह रहे हैं। वर्षा न होने से आप लोग बहुत दुखी हैं। राजा के पापों के कारण ही प्रजा को कष्ट भोगना पड़ता है। मैं बहुत सोच-विचार कर रहा हूँ, फिर भी मुझे अपना कोई दोष दिखलाई नहीं दे रहा है। आप लोगों के कष्ट को दूर करने के लिए मैं बहुत उपाय कर रहा हूँ, परन्तु आप चिन्तित न हों, मैं इसका कोई-न-कोई उपाय अवश्य ही करूँगा।'
राजा के वचनों को सुन प्रजाजन चले गये। राजा मान्धाता भगवान की पूजा कर कुछ विशिष्ट व्यक्तियों को साथ लेकर वन को चल दिया। वहाँ वह ऋषि-मुनियों के आश्रमों में घूमते-घूमते अन्त में ब्रह्मा जी के मानस पुत्र अंगिरा ऋषि के आश्रम पर पहुँच गया। रथ से उतरकर राजा आश्रम में चला गया। वहाँ ऋषि अभी नित्य कर्म से निवृत्त ही हुए थे कि राजा ने उनके सम्मुख पहुँचकर उन्हें प्रणाम किया। ऋषि ने राजा को आशीर्वाद दिया, फिर पूछा- 'हे राजन! आप इस स्थान पर किस प्रयोजन से पधारे हैं, सो कहिये।'
श्याम बाबा का सबसे बढ़िया भजन: देखे ताज क़ुतुब मीनार
राजा ने कहा- 'हे महर्षि! मेरे राज्य में तीन वर्ष से वर्षा नहीं हो रही है। इससे अकाल पड़ गया है और प्रजा कष्ट भोग रही है। राजा के पापों के प्रभाव से ही प्रजा को कष्ट मिलता है, ऐसा शास्त्रों में लिखा है। मैं धर्मानुसार राज्य करता हूँ, फिर यह अकाल कैसे पड़ गया, इसका मुझे अभी तक पता नहीं लग सका। अब मैं आपके पास इसी सन्देह की निवृत्ति के लिए आया हूँ। आप कृपा कर मेरी इस समस्या का निवारण कर मेरी प्रजा के कष्ट को दूर करने के लिए कोई उपाय बतलाइये।'
सब वृत्तान्त सुनने के बाद ऋषि ने कहा- 'हे नृपति! इस सतयुग में धर्म के चारों चरण सम्मिलित हैं। यह युग सभी युगों में उत्तम है। इस युग में केवल ब्राह्मणों को ही तप करने तथा वेद पढ़ने का अधिकार है, किन्तु आपके राज्य में एक शूद्र तप कर रहा है। इसी दोष के कारण आपके राज्य में वर्षा नहीं हो रही है। यदि आप प्रजा का कल्याण चाहते हैं तो शीघ्र ही उस शूद्र का वध करवा दें। जब तक आप यह कार्य नहीं कर लेते, तब तक आपका राज्य अकाल की पीड़ा से कभी मुक्त नहीं हो सकता।'
मन को मोह लेने वाला भजन: महफ़िल है श्याम आपकी
ऋषि के वचन सुन राजा ने कहा- 'हे मुनिश्रेष्ठ! मैं उस निरपराध तप करने वाले शूद्र को नहीं मार सकता। किसी निर्दोष मनुष्य की हत्या करना मेरे नियमों के विरुद्ध है और मेरी आत्मा इसे किसी भी स्थिति में स्वीकार नहीं करेगी। आप इस दोष से मुक्ति का कोई दूसरा उपाय बतलाइये।'
राजा को विचलित जान ऋषि ने कहा- 'हे राजन! यदि आप ऐसा ही चाहते हो तो आषाढ़ माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की देवशयनी नाम की एकादशी का विधानपूर्वक व्रत करो। इस व्रत के प्रभाव से तुम्हारे राज्य में वर्षा होगी और प्रजा भी पूर्व की भाँति सुखी हो जाएगी, क्योंकि इस एकादशी का व्रत सिद्धियों को देने वाला है और कष्टों से मुक्त करने वाला है।'
ऋषि के इन वचनों को सुनकर राजा अपने नगर वापस आ गया और विधानपूर्वक देवशयनी एकादशी का व्रत किया। इस व्रत के प्रभाव से राज्य में अच्छी वर्षा हुई और प्रजा को अकाल से मुक्ति मिली।
खाटू श्याम को अर्जी लगाने वाला भजन: तेरे द्वार खड़ा
इस एकादशी को पद्मा एकादशी भी कहते हैं। इस व्रत के करने से भगवान विष्णु प्रसन्न होते हैं, अतः मोक्ष की इच्छा रखने वाले मनुष्यों को इस एकादशी का व्रत करना चाहिए। चातुर्मास्य व्रत भी इसी एकादशी के व्रत से आरम्भ किया जाता है।""
कथा-सार
अपने कष्टों से मुक्ति पाने के लिए किसी दूसरे का बुरा नहीं करना चाहिए। अपनी शक्ति से और भगवान पर पूरी श्रद्धा और आस्था रखकर सन्तों के कथनानुसार सत्कर्म करने से बड़े-बड़े कष्टों से सहज ही मुक्ति मिल जाती है।"
Devshayani Ekadashi fast story
Arjun said - "" Oh Lord Krishna! What is the fast of Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month? Which deity is worshiped on that day? What is its rule? Please explain all this in detail.
Lord Krishna said - "" O archer! Once Naradji had asked the same question to Brahmaji. Then Brahmaji said that Narad! You have asked the best question for the salvation of all living beings in Kaliyuga, because the Ekadashi fast is the best among all the fasts. All sins are destroyed by its fasting. The name of this Ekadashi is Devshayani Ekadashi. Lord Vishnu is pleased by observing this fast. In this regard, I will tell you a mythological story, listen carefully - there was a Suryavanshi king named Mandhata. He was truthful, great ascetic and Chakravarti. He used to follow his subjects like a child. All his subjects were full of wealth and were living happily. There was never any famine in his kingdom. There was never any kind of natural calamity, but don't know why the gods got angry because of that. Don't know what mistake the king made that once there was a severe famine in his kingdom and the people started feeling very sad due to lack of food. Yagya stopped in the state. One day the people suffering from famine went to the king in sorrow and started praying - 'O king! Rain is the main basis of the creation of the whole world. Due to the lack of this rain, there has been a famine in the state and the people are dying due to the famine. Hey Bhupati! You should make such a effort, by which the suffering of our people can be removed. If there is no relief from famine soon, then people will be forced to take shelter in some other state.
Usse Aana Padega Khatu Mein Dobara
After listening to the people, the king said - ' You people are telling the truth. You people are very sad because of no rain. The people have to suffer because of the sins of the king. I am thinking a lot, yet I do not see any fault of mine. I am taking many measures to remove your sufferings, but don't worry, I will definitely do some remedy for this.'
The people left after listening to the words of the king. After worshiping Lord Mandhata, he went to the forest with some distinguished persons. There he roamed around in the ashrams of sages and finally reached the ashram of sage Angira, the son of Brahma. The king got down from the chariot and went to the hermitage. There the sage had just retired from his daily work that the king reached in front of him and bowed down to him. The sage blessed the king, then asked - 'O king! Tell me for what purpose you have come to this place.'
Best Bhajan of Shyam Baba: Dekhe Taaj Aur Kutub Minaar
The king said - ' O Maharishi! It has not rained in my state for three years. Due to this there has been a famine and the people are suffering. It is written in the scriptures that the people suffer because of the sins of the king. I rule according to religion, then how this famine happened, I still could not find out. Now I have come to you to remove this doubt. Please solve this problem of mine and tell me some solution to remove the suffering of my subjects.'
After listening to all the stories, the sage said - 'O Nripati! All the four stages of religion are included in this Satyug. This age is the best of all ages. In this age only Brahmins have the right to do penance and read Vedas, but in your kingdom a Shudra is doing penance. Because of this defect, there is no rain in your state. If you want the welfare of the people, then get that Shudra killed soon. Until you do this work, your state can never be free from the suffering of famine.'
Mind-blowing hymns: Mahfil Hai Shyam Aapki
After listening to the sage's words, the king said - 'O best of sages! I cannot kill that Shudra doing innocent penance. Killing an innocent human being is against my rules and my soul will not accept it under any circumstances. You tell me some other way to get rid of this defect.'
Knowing the king distracted, the sage said- 'O king! If you want the same, then observe a fast on the Ekadashi named Devshayani in the Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month. Due to the effect of this fast, there will be rain in your kingdom and the people will also be happy like before, because the fast of this Ekadashi is going to give achievements and get rid of troubles.
After listening to these words of the sage, the king returned to his city and observed the Devshayani Ekadashi fast. Due to the effect of this fast, there was good rain in the state and the people got freedom from famine.
Hymn invoking Khatu Shyam: Tere Dwar Khada
This Ekadashi is also called Padma Ekadashi. Lord Vishnu is pleased by observing this fast, so people who wish for salvation should fast on this Ekadashi. Chaturmasya fast is also started from this Ekadashi fast.
Synopsis
To get rid of your sufferings, one should not do bad to others. By doing good deeds according to the sayings of the saints with your own strength and having full faith and faith in God, you can easily get rid of big troubles.
