एक समय की बात है जब किसी वैरागी साधु को राजाओं की तरह सुख भोगने की लालसा होने लगी। इसलिए, वह लक्ष्मी जी की आराधना करने लगता है। उस साधु की आराधना से प्रसन्न होकर लक्ष्मी जी उसे दर्शन देती हैं और साधु को वरदान देती है कि उसे सम्मान और उच्च पद प्राप्त होगा।
वह साधु दूसरे दिन राजा के दरबार में पहुंच जाता है और वरदान के अभिमान में राजा को सिंघासन से धकेल देता है। साधु का राजा के साथ ऐसा व्यवहार देखकर उनके सिपाही साधु को पकड़ने के लिए उसकी तरफ दौड़ते हैं, लेकिन तभी राजा के मुकुट से एक काला नाग निकल आता है। यह देखकर सभी चौंक जाते हैं और सभी उस साधु को ज्ञानी संत और चमत्कारी समझने लगते हैं। वहां दबरबार में मौजूद सभी उस साधु की जय जयकार करने लगते हैं। राजा भी साधु से खुश होकर उसे अपना मंत्री बन देता है। साधु के मंत्री बनने पर राजा उसे निवास के लिए एक महल देता है, जहां वह शान के साथ रहने लगता है।

कुछ समय बाद एक दिन साधु राजा के हाथ पकड़कर उसे दरबार से खींचते हुए बाहर ले जाता है। यह देखकर उसके दरबारी भी पीछे-पीछे भागने लगते हैं। सभी के दरबार से बाहर निकलते ही भूकंप आता है, जिसमे महल खंडहर बन जाता है। सबको लगता है कि साधु ने उनकी जान बचाई। इससे साधु का सम्मान और बढ़ जाता है। यह देखकर साधु में घमंड की भावना जागृत हो जाती है।
इसके कुछ दिनों के बाद एक सुबह साधु राजमहल में घूम रहा होता है, तभी उसकी नजर गणेश जी की मूर्ति पर पड़ती है। साधु को वह प्रतिमा अच्छी नहीं लगती, तो वह उसे हटवा देता है। इससे गणेश जी साधु से रुष्ठ हो जाते हैं और उसकी बुद्धि भ्रष्ट कर देते हैं। इस कारण वह हर काम उल्टा-पुल्टा करने लगता है। इससे राजा साधु से क्रोधित होकर उसे कैदखाने में डलवा देता है।

साधु कैदखाने में ही फिर से लक्ष्मी जी की पूजा आराधना करने लगता है। कुछ समय बाद लक्ष्मी जी साधु को दर्शन देती हैं और कहती हैं कि तुमने गणेश जी को रुष्ठ किया है, इसलिए तुम्हें गणेश जी की पूजा कर उन्हें प्रसन्न करना होगा। लक्ष्मी जी की बात सुनकर साधु गणेश जी की आराधना करने लगता है। इससे गणेश जी प्रसन्न हो जाते हैं और उनका क्रोध शांत हो जाता है। वह राजा के सपने में आकर साधु को फिर से मंत्री बनाने के लिए कहते हैं। राजा दूसरे दिन साधु को कैद से आजाद कर फिर से मंत्री बना देते हैं।
इस घटना के बाद लक्ष्मी और गणेश जी एक साथ पूजे की जाने लगी। लक्ष्मी जी धन की देवी है, तो गणेश जी को बुद्धि को संयम में रखने वाला माना गया है। वैसे कहा भी गया है कि एक संपन्न जीवन के लिए धन और बुद्धि दोनों जरूरी होते हैं। इसलिए, लक्ष्मी जी और गणेश जी की पूजा साथ में की जाती है।

इस कहानी से यह सीख मिलती है कि हमें अहंकार नहीं करना चाहिए, क्योंकि अहंकार के कारण जो हमारे पास है, वो भी हमसे छिन सकता है।

Seeing such behavior of the monk with the king, his soldiers run towards him to catch the monk, But then a black cobra emerges from the king's crown. Everyone is shocked to see this and everyone starts considering that monk as a wise saint and miraculous. There everyone present in the court started hailing that monk. The king is also pleased with the monk and makes him his minister. On becoming the minister of the monk, the king gives him a palace for his residence, where he lives with pride.

After some time, one day the monk holding the king's hand drags him out of the court. Seeing this, his courtiers also started running behind him. As soon as everyone leaves the court, an earthquake occurs, in which the palace becomes ruins. Everyone thinks that the monk saved his life. This increases the respect of the monk. Seeing this, the feeling of pride awakens in the monk.
After a few days of this, one morning the sadhu was roaming in the palace, when his eyes fell on the idol of Ganesha. If the monk does not like that idol, then he gets it removed. Due to this Ganesh ji gets angry with the monk and corrupts his intelligence. Because of this, he starts doing everything upside down. Due to this, the king gets angry with the monk and puts him in prison.

The monk again starts worshiping Lakshmi ji in the prison. After some time Lakshmi ji appears to the monk and says that you have angered Ganesha, so you have to please him by worshiping Ganesha. After listening to Lakshmi ji, the monk starts worshiping Ganesh ji. This pleases Ganesha and his anger subsides. He appears in the king's dream and asks the monk to make him a minister again. The king frees the monk from prison the next day and makes him a minister again.
After this incident Lakshmi and Ganesha were worshiped together. Lakshmi ji is the goddess of wealth, so Ganesh ji is considered to be the one who keeps the intellect under control. By the way, it has also been said that both money and intelligence are necessary for a prosperous life. Therefore, Lakshmi ji and Ganesh ji are worshiped together.
