गंगा की उत्पत्ति कथा
कहते हैं कि गंगा देवी के पिता का नाम हिमालय है जो पार्वती के पिता भी हैं। जैसे राजा दक्ष की पुत्री माता सती ने हिमालय के यहां पार्वती के नाम से जन्म लिया था उसी तरह माता गंगा ने अपने दूसरे जन्म में ऋषि जह्नु के यहां जन्म लिया था।

यह भी कहा जाता है कि गंगा का जन्म ब्रह्मा के कमंडल से हुआ था। मतलब यह कि गंगा नामक एक नदी का जन्म। एक अन्य कथा के अनुसार ब्रह्माजी ने विष्णुजी के चरणों को आदर सहित धोया और उस जल को अपने कमंडल में एकत्र कर लिया। भगवान विष्णु के अंगूठे से गंगा प्रकट हुई अतः उसे विष्णुपदी कहां जाता है। एक अन्य कथा के अनुसार गंगा पर्वतों के राजा हिमवान और उनकी पत्नी मीना की पुत्री हैं, इस प्रकार वे देवी पार्वती की बहन भी हैं। कुछ जगहों पर उन्हें ब्रह्मा के कुल का बताया गया है।
गंगा की कहानी नंबर-1
यह तो सभी जानते हैं कि भगवान राम के पूर्वज इक्ष्वाकु वंशी राजा भगीरथ के प्रयासों से ही गंगा नदी स्वर्ग से धरती पर आई थी। लेकिन उन्हें स्वर्ग से धरती पर गंगा को लाने के लिए तपस्या करना पड़ी थी। उनकी तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर ब्रह्मा ने - 'राजन! तुम गंगा का पृथ्वी पर अवतरण तो चाहते हो? परंतु क्या तुमने पृथ्वी से पूछा है कि वह गंगा के भार तथा वेग को संभाल पाएगी? मेरा विचार है कि गंगा के वेग को संभालने की शक्ति केवल भगवान शंकर में है। इसलिए उचित यह होगा कि गंगा का भार एवं वेग संभालने के लिए भगवान शिव का अनुग्रह प्राप्त कर लिया जाए।'
महाराज भगीरथ ने वैसे ही किया। उनकी कठोर तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर ब्रह्माजी ने गंगा की धारा को अपने कमंडल से छोड़ा। तब भगवान शंकर ने गंगा की धारा को अपनी जटाओं में समेटकर जटाएं बांध लीं। बाद में भगीरथ की आराधना के बाद उन्होंने गंगा को अपनी जटाओं से मुक्त कर दिया।

कहते हैं कि ब्रह्मचारिणी गंगा के द्वारा किए स्पर्श से ही महादेव ने उन्हें अपनी पत्नी के रूप में स्वीकार किया। पत्नी पुरुष की सेवा करती है अतः उसका वास पति के हृदय में अथवा चरणों मे होता है किंतु भगवती गंगा शिव के मस्तक पर विराजति है। भगवान विष्णु के अंगूठे से गंगा प्रकट हुई अतः उसे विष्णुपदी कहां जाता है। भगवान विष्णु के प्रसाद रूप में शिव ने देवी गंगा का पत्नी के रूप में स्वीकार किया।
कहते हैं कि शंकर और पार्वती के पुत्र कार्तिकेय का गर्भ भी देवी गंगा ने धारण किया था। गंगा के पिता भी हिमवान है अतः वो पार्वती की बहन मानी जाती है। स्कंद पुराण के अनुसार, देवी गंगा कार्तिकेय (मुरुगन) की सौतेली माता हैं; कार्तिकेय वास्तव में शंकर और पार्वती के एक पुत्र हैं। पार्वती ने अपने शारीरिक मेल से गणेश की छवि का निर्माण किया, लेकिन गंगा के पवित्र जल में डूबने के बाद गणेश जीवित हो उठे। इसलिए कहा जाता है कि गणेश की दो माताएं हैं-पार्वती और गंगा और इसीलिए उन्हें द्विमातृ तथा गंगेय (गंगा का पुत्र) भी कहा जाता है।

ब्रह्म वैवर्त पुराण (2.6.13-95) के अनुसार, विष्णु की तीन पत्नियां हैं जिनकी आपस में बनती नहीं थी, इसलिए उन्होंने केवल लक्ष्मी को अपने साथ रखा और गंगा को शिवजी के पास तथा सरस्वती को ब्रह्माजी के पास भेज दिया।
गंगा की कहानी नंबर-2
पूर्व जन्म में राजा प्रतीप महाभिष थे। ब्रह्माजी की सेवा में वे उपस्थित थे। उस वक्त गंगा भी वहां पर उपस्थित थी। राजा महाभिष गंगा पर मोहित होकर उसे एकटक देखने लगे। गंगा भी उन पर मोहित होकर उन्हें देखने लगी। ब्रह्मा ने यह सब देख लिया और तब उन्हें मनुष्य योनि में दु:ख झेलने का श्राप दे दिया।
राजा महाभिष ने कुरु राजा प्रतीप के रूप में जन्म लिए और उससे पहले गंगा ने ऋषि जह्नु की पुत्री के रूप में। एक दिन पुत्र की कामना से महाराजा प्रतीप गंगा के किनारे तपस्या कर रहे थे। उनके तप, रूप और सौन्दर्य पर मोहित होकर गंगा उनकी दाहिनी जंघा पर आकर बैठ गईं और कहने लगीं, 'राजन! मैं आपसे विवाह करना चाहती हूं। मैं जह्नु ऋषि की पुत्री गंगा हूं।'

इस पर राजा प्रतीप ने कहा, 'गंगे! तुम मेरी दाहिनी जंघा पर बैठी हो, जबकि पत्नी को तो वामांगी होना चाहिए, दाहिनी जंघा तो पुत्र का प्रतीक है अतः मैं तुम्हें अपने पुत्रवधू के रूप में स्वीकार कर सकता हूं।' यह सुनकर गंगा वहां से चली गईं।'
जब महाराज प्रतीप को पुत्र की प्राप्ति हुई तो उन्होंने उसका नाम शांतनु रखा और इसी शांतनु से गंगा का विवाह हुआ। गंगा से उन्हें 8 पुत्र मिले जिसमें से 7 को गंगा नदी में बहा दिया गया और 8वें पुत्र को पाला-पोसा। उनके 8वें पुत्र का नाम देवव्रत था। यह देवव्रत ही आगे चलकर भीष्म कहलाया।
Origin story of Ganga
It is said that the name of Ganga Devi's father is Himalaya, who is also the father of Parvati. Just as Mata Sati, the daughter of King Daksha, was born in the Himalayas as Parvati, similarly Mata Ganga was born in her second birth at the place of Rishi Jahnu.

It is also said that Ganga was born from the Kamandal of Brahma. It means the birth of a river named Ganga. According to another story, Brahmaji washed the feet of Vishnuji with respect and collected that water in his Kamandal. The Ganga appeared from the thumb of Lord Vishnu, hence it is known as Vishnupadi. According to another legend, Ganga is the daughter of the mountain king Himavan and his wife Meena, thus she is also the sister of goddess Parvati. In some places he has been described as belonging to the clan of Brahma.
Story of Ganga No. 1
It is known to all that the river Ganga came from heaven to earth only because of the efforts of Ikshvaku dynasty king Bhagirath, the ancestor of Lord Rama. But he had to do penance to bring Ganga from heaven to earth. Pleased with his penance, Brahma said - 'Rajan! Do you want Ganga to descend on earth? But have you asked the earth whether it will be able to handle the weight and speed of Ganga? I think only Lord Shankar has the power to control the speed of Ganga. That's why it would be appropriate that Lord Shiva's grace should be obtained to handle the weight and velocity of Ganga.

Maharaj Bhagirath did the same. Pleased with his harsh penance, Brahmaji released the stream of Ganga from his kamandal. Then Lord Shankar gathered the stream of Ganges in his hair and tied the hair. Later, after worshiping Bhagirath, he freed Ganga from her locks.
It is said that Mahadev accepted her as his wife only by the touch of Brahmacharini Ganga. The wife serves the man, so she resides in the husband's heart or feet, but Bhagwati Ganga sits on the head of Shiva. The Ganga appeared from the thumb of Lord Vishnu, hence it is known as Vishnupadi. Shiva accepted Goddess Ganga as his wife as an offering to Lord Vishnu.

It is said that Kartikeya, the son of Shankar and Parvati was also conceived by Goddess Ganga. Ganga's father is also Himwan, so she is considered to be Parvati's sister. According to the Skanda Purana, the goddess Ganga is the stepmother of Kartikeya (Murugan); Kartikeya is actually a son of Shankar and Parvati. Parvati created the image of Ganesha from their physical union, but Ganesha came to life after being immersed in the holy waters of the Ganges. That's why it is said that Ganesha has two mothers - Parvati and Ganga and that is why he is also called Dwimatri and Gangeya (son of Ganga).
According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana (2.6.13-95), Vishnu had three wives who were not compatible, so he kept only Lakshmi with him and sent Ganga to Shiva and Saraswati to Brahma.
Story of Ganga No. 2
King Pratipa was Mahabhish in his previous birth. He was present in the service of Brahmaji. Ganga was also present there at that time. King Mahabhish got fascinated by Ganga and started staring at her. Ganga also got fascinated by him and started looking at him. Brahma saw all this and then cursed him to suffer in human form.
King Mahabhisha was born as the Kuru king Pratipa and before that Ganga as the daughter of sage Jahnu. One day Maharaja Pratip was doing penance on the banks of the Ganges with the desire of a son. Fascinated by his tenacity, form and beauty, Ganga sat on his right thigh and started saying, 'Rajan! I want to marry you I am Ganga, the daughter of Jahnu Rishi.'

On this King Pratip said, ' Ganges! You are sitting on my right thigh, while the wife should be left-handed, the right thigh is the symbol of the son, so I can accept you as my daughter-in-law.' Hearing this, Ganga left from there.
When Maharaj Pratip got a son, he named him Shantanu and Ganga got married to this Shantanu. He got 8 sons from Ganga, out of which 7 were drowned in river Ganga and brought up the 8th son. His 8th son's name was Devvrat. This Devavrata later came to be known as Bhishma.
