गरुड़ पुराण को मृत्यु के बाद क्यों सुनते हैं
गरुड़ पुराण क्या है : एक बार गरुड़ ने भगवान विष्णु से, प्राणियों की मृत्यु, यमलोक यात्रा, नरक-योनियों तथा सद्गति के बारे में अनेक गूढ़ और रहस्ययुक्त प्रश्न पूछे। उन्हीं प्रश्नों का भगवान विष्णु ने सविस्तार उत्तर दिया। यह प्रश्न और उत्तर की श्रृंखला ही गरुड़ पुराण है।

क्यों सुनाते हैं इसे मृत्यु के बाद :
1. गरुण पुराण में, मृत्यु के पहले और बाद की स्थिति के बारे में बताया गया है। इसीलिए यह पुराण मृतक को सुनाया जाता है।
2. 13 दिनों तक मृतक अपनों के बीच ही रहता है। इस दौरान गरुढ़ पुराण का पाठ रखने से वह स्वर्ग-नरक, गति, सद्गति, अधोगति, दुर्गति आदि तरह की गतियों के बारे में जान लेता है।
3. आगे की यात्रा में उसे किन-किन बातों का सामना करना पड़ेगा, कौन से लोक में उसका गमन हो सकता है यह सभी वह गरुड़ पुराण सुनकर जान लेता है।
4. जब मृत्यु के उपरांत घर में गरुड़ पुराण का पाठ होता है तो इस बहाने मृतक के परिजन यह जान लेते हैं कि बुराई क्या है और सद्गति किस तरह के कर्मों से मिलती है ताकि मृतक और उसके परिजन दोनों ही यह भलिभांति जान लें कि उच्च लोक की यात्रा करने के लिए कौन से कर्म करना चाहिए।
5. गरुड़ पुराण हमें सत्कर्मों के लिए प्रेरित करता है। सत्कर्म और सुमति से ही सद्गति और मुक्ति मिलती है।

6. गरुड़ पुराण में व्यक्ति के कर्मों के आधार पर दंड स्वरुप मिलने वाले विभिन्न नरकों के बारे में बताया गया है। गरुड़ पुराण के अनुसार कौनसी चीजें व्यक्ति को सद्गति की ओर ले जाती हैं इस बात का उत्तर भगवान विष्णु ने दिया है।
7. गरुड़ पुराण में हमारे जीवन को लेकर कई गूढ बातें बताई गई है। जिनके बारे में व्यक्ति को जरूर जनना चाहिए। आत्मज्ञान का विवेचन ही गरुड़ पुराण का मुख्य विषय है। गरूड़ पुराण के उन्नीस हजार श्लोक में से बचे सात हजार श्लोक में गरूड़ पुराण में ज्ञान, धर्म, नीति, रहस्य, व्यावहारिक जीवन, आत्म, स्वर्ग, नर्क और अन्य लोकों का वर्णन मिलता है।
8. इसमें भक्ति, ज्ञान, वैराग्य, सदाचार, निष्काम कर्म की महिमा के साथ यज्ञ, दान, तप तीर्थ आदि शुभ कर्मों में सर्व साधारण को प्रवृत्त करने के लिए अनेक लौकिक और पारलौकिक फलों का वर्णन किया गया है। यह सभी बातें मृतक और उसके परिजन जानकर अपने जीवन को सुंदर बना सकते हैं।
9. इसके अतिरिक्त इसमें आयुर्वेद, नीतिसार आदि विषयों के वर्णन के साथ मृत जीव के अन्तिम समय में किए जाने वाले कृत्यों का विस्तार से निरूपण किया गया है।
10. कहते हैं कि गरुढ़ पुराण का पाठ सुनने से ही मृतक आत्मा को शांति प्राप्त होती है और उसे मुक्ति का मार्ग पता चल जाता है। वह अपने सारे संताप को भूलकर प्रभु मार्ग पर चलकर सद्गति प्राप्त कर या तो पितरलोक में चला जाता है या पुन: मनुष्य योनी में जन्म ले लेता है। उसे प्रेत बनकर भटकना नहीं पड़ता है।

In this, along with the glory of devotion, knowledge, quietness, virtuous conduct, selfless work, many cosmic and otherworldly fruits have been described to motivate the common people in the auspicious deeds of Yajna, charity, penance, pilgrimage etc. By knowing all these things the deceased and his relatives can make their life beautiful.
9. Apart from this, along with the description of subjects like Ayurveda, Ethics, etc., the acts to be performed in the last moments of the dead soul have been described in detail.
10. It is said that only by listening to the recitation of Garuda Purana, the dead soul gets peace and it gets to know the path of salvation. Forgetting all his sorrows, he walks on the path of God and attains salvation, either goes to Pitralok or takes birth again in human form. He doesn't have to wander like a ghost.
