श्रावण मास में पांच सोमवार को शिवजी के 5 मुख का प्रतीक माना जाता है। महादेव के 5 मुख पंच महाभूतों के सूचक हैं। दस हाथ 10 दिशाओं के सूचक हैं। हाथों में विद्यमान अस्त्र-शस्त्र जगतरक्षक शक्तियों के सूचक हैं।

1. श्रावण मास में महादेव के पांच मुख का महत्व है। अनेक विद्वान मानते हैं कि सृष्टि, स्थिति, लय, अनुग्रह एवं निग्रह- इन 5 कार्यों की निर्मात्री 5 शक्तियों के संकेत शिव के 5 मुख हैं। पूर्व मुख सृष्टि, दक्षिण मुख स्थिति, पश्चिम मुख प्रलय, उत्तर मुख अनुग्रह (कृपा) एवं ऊर्ध्व मुख निग्रह (ज्ञान) का सूचक है।
2. भगवान शंकर के पांच मुखों में ऊर्ध्व मुख ईशान दुग्ध जैसे रंग का, पूर्व मुख तत्पुरुष पीत वर्ण का, दक्षिण मुख अघोर नील वर्ण का, पश्चिम मुख सद्योजात श्वेत वर्ण का और उत्तर मुख वामदेव कृष्ण वर्ण का है। भगवान शिव के पांच मुख चारों दिशाओं में और पांचवा मध्य में है। भगवान शिव के पश्चिम दिशा का मुख सद्योजात बालक के समान स्वच्छ, शुद्ध व निर्विकार हैं। उत्तर दिशा का मुख वामदेव अर्थात् विकारों का नाश करने वाला। दक्षिण मुख अघोर अर्थात निन्दित कर्म करने वाला। निन्दित कर्म करने वाला भी शिव की कृपा से निन्दित कर्म को शुद्ध बना लेता हैं। शिव के पूर्व मुख का नाम तत्पुरुष अर्थात अपने आत्मा में स्थित रहना। ऊर्ध्व मुख का नाम ईशान अर्थात जगत का स्वामी।

3. शिवपुराण में भगवान शिव कहते हैं- सृष्टि, पालन, संहार, तिरोभाव और अनुग्रह-मेरे ये पांच कृत्य (कार्य) मेरे पांचों मुखों द्वारा धारित हैं।
4. कथा अनुसार एक बार भगवान विष्णु ने अत्यन्त मनोहर किशोर रूप धारण किया। उस मनोहर रूप को देखने के लिए चतुर्भुज ब्रह्मा, बहुमुख वाले शेष, सहस्त्राक्ष मुख धारण कर इन्द्र आदि देवता आए। सभी ने भगवान के इस रूप का आनंद लिया तो भगवान शिव सोचने लगे कि यदि मेरे भी अनेक मुख होते तो मैं भी अनेक नेत्रों से भगवान के इस किशोर रूप का सबसे अधिक दर्शन करता। कैलाशपति के मन में इस इच्छा के उत्पन्न होते ही वे पंचमुख हो गए।

5. भगवान शिव के पांच मुख-सद्योजात, वामदेव, तत्पुरुष, अघोर और ईशान हुए और प्रत्येक मुख में तीन-तीन नेत्र बन गए। तभी से वे 'पंचानन' या 'पंचवक्त्र' कहलाने लगे। भगवान शिव के इन पंचमुख के अवतार की कथा पढ़ने और सुनने का बहुत माहात्म्य है। यह प्रसंग मनुष्य के अंदर शिव-भक्ति जाग्रत करने के साथ उसकी समस्त मनोकामनाओं को पूरी कर परम गति देने वाला है।

1. There is importance of five faces of Mahadev in the month of Shravan. Many scholars believe that the 5 faces of Shiva are the symbols of the 5 powers that create creation, condition, rhythm, grace and control of these 5 works. The east face signifies creation, the south face status, the west face destruction, the north face grace (grace) and the upward face Nigraha (knowledge).
2. Among the five faces of Lord Shankar, the upper face is of milk-like color, the east face is of Tatpurush yellow color, the south face is of Aghor Neel color, the west face is of Sadyojat white color and the north face is of Vamdev Krishna color. Lord Shiva has five faces in all the four directions and the fifth in the middle. The west-facing face of Lord Shiva is as clean, pure and free from vices as a Sadyojat child. The face of the north direction is Vamdev, which means the one who destroys vices. South-facing Aghor means one who does reprehensible deeds. Even the one who does reprehensible deeds makes the reprehensible deeds pure by the grace of Shiva. The name of the former face of Shiva, Tatpurush, means to be situated in one's soul. The name of the upper face is Ishaan, which means the master of the world.

3. Lord Shiva says in Shivpuran- creation, maintenance, destruction, disappearance and grace-these five acts (actions) of mine are held by my five faces.
4. According to the legend, once Lord Vishnu assumed the form of a very handsome teenager. Four-armed Brahma, multi-faced Shesh, thousand-faced gods like Indra etc. came to see that beautiful form. Everyone enjoyed this form of God, then Lord Shiva started thinking that if I too had many faces, I too would have seen this teenage form of God with many eyes. Kailashpati became five faced as soon as this desire arose in his mind.

5. Lord Shiva had five faces - Sadyojat, Vamdev, Tatpurush, Aghor and Ishaan and each face had three eyes. Since then he came to be known as 'Panchanaan' or 'Panchvaktra'. There is great significance in reading and listening to the story of these five-faced incarnations of Lord Shiva. This event is going to give ultimate speed by fulfilling all his wishes along with awakening the devotion of Shiva within man.
