जितिया की व्रत कथा
सालों पहले नर्मदा नदी के ठीक पास कंचनबटी नाम का एक नगर बसा हुआ था। वहां राजा मलयकेतु का शासन था। कंचनबटी नगर के पास में ही एक रेतीली बालुहटा नामक जगह थी, जिसके पास में एक बड़ा-सा पेड़ था। उस पेड़ में एक चील रहती थी और नीचे एक गीदड़। दोनों में गहरी दोस्ती थी।
एक दिन दोनों ने सोचा कि सारी महिलाएं जितिया व्रत करती हैं, तो क्यों न हम भी कर लें। इसी सोच के साथ दोनों ने ठान ली कि अब वो भी इस व्रत को करेंगी। उन्होंने श्री जीऊतवाहन भगवान को मन-ही-मन नमस्कार करते हुए कहा, ‘हम आपकी पूजा और व्रत पूरी विधि के साथ करेंगे।’

जैसे ही व्रत का दिन आया, तो पास के ही एक धनवान व्यापारी की मौत हो गई। उसको अंतिम विदाई देने के लिए बालुहटा ही लाया गया, जहां गीदड़ और चील रहते थे।
व्रत के दिन गीदड़ ने मरे हुए व्यक्ति को देखा, तो उसे भूख लग गई। वो खुद को रोक नहीं पाई और मांस खाने की वजह से उसका व्रत उसी वक्त टूट गया। उस व्यापारी के शव को चील ने भी देखा था, लेकिन उसने व्रत के कारण उसे नहीं खाया।

उसके बाद चील और गीदड़ दोनों अगले जन्म में कंचनवटी के भास्कर नामक ब्राह्मण के घर में बेटी के रूप में पैदा हुए। चील का जन्म बड़ी बहन के रूप में हुआ, जिसका नाम शीलवती पड़ा और उसकी शादी बुद्धिसेन नामक लड़के से कराई गई।
गीदड़ का जन्म उसकी छोटी बहन कपुरावती के रूप में हुआ। समय होने पर उसका विवाह कंचनवटी के राजा मलयकेतु से उसके पिता ने करवाया।

भले ही कपुरावती विवाह के बाद कंचनबटी की रानी बन गई हो, लेकिन उसे बेटा का सुख नहीं मिला। उसके घर जितने भी बच्चे जन्म लेते थे, वो उसी दिन मर जाते। ऐसा होते-होते कपुरावती काफी परेशान हो गई। इधर, उसकी बड़ी बहन शीलवती को सात बेटे हुए थे। जब उसके सारे बेटे बड़े हो गए, तो उन्होंने महल में कार्य करना शुरू कर दिया।
अपनी दीदी के बेटों को देखकर धीरे-धीरे कपुरावती रानी के मन में जलन का भाव पैदा होने लगा। उसने इसी जलन की वजह से अपने पति को कहकर अपनी दीदी के सारे बेटों के सिर कटवाकर एक बर्तन में रख दिए। उन सभी सात बर्तनों को कपुरावती ने लाल रंग के कपड़े से ढक दिया और अपनी दीदी शीलवती के पास भिजवा दिया।

भगवान जीऊतवाहन भी ये सब देख रहे थे। उन्होंने रास्ते में ही सभी सात भाइयों के सिर को धड़ से जोड़ा और अमृत पिलाकर जिंदा कर दिया। फिर सभी भाई अपने घर चले गए और उन बर्तन में भगवान की कृपा से फल भर गए।
उधर, कुपरावती अपनी दीदी के घर से शोक समाचार मिलने के इंतजार में बैठी हुई थी। जब कोई संदेश नहीं आया, तो वो खुद ही शीलवती के घर चली गई। वहां जैसे ही उसने अपनी दीदी के सारे बेटों को जिंदा देखा, तो वो हैरान हो गई।

कुछ देर बाद उसने दीदी शीलवती को अपनी हरकत के बारे में बताया। उसने कहा कि किस तरह से उसने बर्तनों में उसके बेटों के सिर काटकर डाल दिए थे और जोर-जोर से रोने लगी। तभी शीलवती को अपने पिछले जन्म के बारे में याद आ गया।
वो अपनी छोटी बहन को उसी पेड़ को पास लेकर गई, जहां वो दोनों पहले रहा करते थे। उसने कपुरावती को पिछले जन्म में रखे जितिया व्रत की पूरी कहानी सुनाी। यह सब जानते ही कपुरावती ने उसी वक्त अपना दम तोड़ दिया।

राजा को तुरंत शीलवती ने इस बात की जानकारी भिजवाई। अपनी पत्नी के बारे में दुख भरा समाचार मिलते ही राजा वहां पहुंचे और कपुरवती को उसी पेड़ के नीचे अंतिम विदाई दी।

बुरे कर्म कभी भी पीछा नहीं छोड़ते। गलत कामों की सजा को भोगना ही पड़ता है।
Fasting story of Jitiya
Years ago, a town named Kanchanbati was situated just near the Narmada river. There was the rule of King Malayketu. Near the city of Kanchanbati, there was a place called Baluhta, near which there was a big tree. An eagle lived in that tree and a jackal below. Both had a deep friendship.
One day both of them thought that all the women do Jitiya Vrat, so why not we also do it. With this thought, both of them decided that now they will also observe this fast. He offered salutations to Shri Jiutvahana Lord in his heart and said, 'We will worship you and fast with full method.'

As soon as the day of fasting came, a rich merchant nearby died. To bid him a final farewell, he was brought to Baluhata, where jackals and eagles lived.
On the day of the fast, the jackal saw the dead man, and felt hungry. She could not stop herself and because of eating meat, her fast was broken at that very moment. The dead body of that merchant was also seen by the eagle, but it did not eat it because of the fast.

After that both the eagle and the jackal were born as daughters in the next birth in the house of a Brahmin named Bhaskar of Kanchanavati. Cheel was born as an elder sister, named Shilavati, and was married to a boy named Budhisen.
The jackal was born as his younger sister Kapuravati. When the time came, her father got her married to Malayketu, the king of Kanchanavati.

Kapuravati may have become the queen of Kanchanbati after marriage, but she did not get the happiness of a son. All the children who were born in his house would die on the same day. As this happened, Kapuravati became very upset. Here, his elder sister Shilavati had seven sons. When all his sons grew up, they started working in the palace.
Seeing the sons of her sister, Kapuravati Rani slowly started feeling jealous. Because of this jealousy, she asked her husband to cut off the heads of all the sons of her sister and put them in a vessel. Kapuravati covered all those seven utensils with a red colored cloth and sent them to her sister Shilvati.

Lord Jiutavahana was also watching all this. On the way, he attached the heads of all the seven brothers to the trunk and made them alive by giving them nectar. Then all the brothers went to their homes and those pots were filled with fruits by the grace of God.
On the other hand, Kupravati was sitting waiting for the news of condolence from her sister's house. When no message came, she herself went to Shilavati's house. As soon as she saw all the sons of her sister alive there, she was surprised.

After some time he told Didi Shilavati about his act. She told how she had put the heads of her sons in pots and started crying loudly. Then Shilavati remembered about her previous birth.
She took her younger sister to the same tree near where they both used to live before. He told Kapuravati the whole story of the Jitiya fast he had observed in his previous birth. Knowing all this, Kapuravati died at the same time.

Shilavati immediately sent information about this to the king. On hearing the sad news about his wife, the king reached there and bid farewell to Kapurvati under the same tree.
