कैसे बने कर्ण सबसे बड़े दानवीर?
भगवान् कृष्ण ने भी कर्ण को सबसे बड़ा दानी माना है। अर्जुन ने एक बार कृष्ण से पूछा की सब कर्ण की इतनी प्रशांसा क्यों करते हैं? तब कृष्ण ने दो पर्वतों को सोने में बदल दिया और अर्जुन से कहा के इस सोने को गांव वालों में बांट दो। अर्जुन ने सारे गांव वालों को बुलाया और पर्वत काट-काट कर देने लगे और कुछ समय बाद थक कर बैठ गए।
तब कृष्ण ने कर्ण को बुलाया और सोने को बांटने के लिए कहा, तो कर्ण ने बिना कुछ सोचे समझे गांव वालों को कह दिया के ये सारा सोना गांव वालों का है और वे इसे आपस में बांट ले। तब कृष्ण ने अर्जुन को समझाया के कर्ण दान करने से पहले अपने हित के बारे में नहीं सोचता। इसी बात के कारण उन्हें सबसे बड़ा दानवीर कहा जाता है।

1 कवच और कुंडल: भगवान कृष्ण यह भली-भांति जानते थे कि जब तक कर्ण के पास उसका कवच और कुंडल है, तब तक उसे कोई नहीं मार सकता। ऐसे में अर्जुन की सुरक्षा की कोई गारंटी नहीं। उधर देवराज इन्द्र भी चिंतित थे, क्योंकि अर्जुन उनका पुत्र था। भगवान कृष्ण और देवराज इन्द्र दोनों जानते थे कि जब तक कर्ण के पास पैदायशी कवच और कुंडल हैं, वह युद्ध में अजेय रहेगा। दोनों ने मिलकर योजना बनाई और इंद्र एक विप्र के वेश में कर्ण के पास पहुंच गए और उनसे दान मांगने लगे। कर्ण ने कहा मांगों। विप्र बने इंद्र ने कहा, नहीं पहले आपको वचन देना होगा कि मैं जो मांगूगा आप वो दे देंगे। कर्ण ने तैश में आकर जल हाथ में लेकर कहा- हम प्रण करते हैं विप्रवर! अब तुरंत मांगिए। तब क्षद्म इन्द्र ने कहा- राजन! आपके शरीर के कवच और कुंडल हमें दानस्वरूप चाहिए।
कर्ण ने इन्द्र की आंखों में झांका और फिर दानवीर कर्ण ने बिना एक क्षण भी गंवाएं अपने कवच और कुंडल अपने शरीर से खंजर की सहायता से अलग किए और विप्रवर को सौंप दिए। इन्द्र ने तुंरत वहां से दौड़ ही लगा दी और दूर खड़े रथ पर सवार होकर भाग गए। लेकिन कुछ मील जाकर इन्द्र का रथ नीचे उतरकर भूमि में धंस गया। तभी आकाशवाणी हुई, 'देवराज इन्द्र, तुमने बड़ा पाप किया है। अपने पुत्र अर्जुन की जान बचाने के लिए तूने छलपूर्वक कर्ण की जान खतरे में डाल दी है। अब यह रथ यहीं धंसा रहेगा और तू भी यहीं धंस जाएगा। तब इंद्र ने कर्ण को कवच कुंडल के बदले अमोघ अस्त्र दिया।

2 कुंती को दान में दिया वचन: एक बार कुंती कर्ण के पास गई और उससे पांडवों की ओर से लड़ने का आग्रह करने लगी। कर्ण को मालूम था कि कुंती मेरी मां है। कुंती के लाख समझाने पर भी कर्ण नहीं माने और कहा कि जिनके साथ मैंने अब तक का अपना सारा जीवन बिताया उसके साथ मैं विश्वासघात नहीं कर सकता।
तब कुंती ने कहा कि क्या तुम अपने भाइयों को मारोगे? इस पर कर्ण ने बड़ी ही दुविधा की स्थिति में वचन दिया, 'माते, तुम जानती हो कि कर्ण के यहां याचक बनकर आया कोई भी खाली हाथ नहीं जाता अत: मैं तुम्हें वचन देता हूं कि अर्जुन को छोड़कर मैं अपने अन्य भाइयों पर शस्त्र नहीं उठाऊंगा।'

3 कृष्ण ने ली दान की परीक्षा: जब महाराज युधिष्ठिर इंद्रप्रस्थ पर राज्य करते थे तब वे काफी दान आदि दिया करते थे। पांडवों को इसका अभिमान होने लगा। भीम व अर्जुन ने श्रीकृष्ण के समक्ष युधिष्ठिर की प्रशंसा शुरू की कि वे कितने बड़े दानी हैं। लेकिन कृष्ण ने उन्हें बीच में ही टोककर कहा- हमने कर्ण जैसा दानवीर कहीं नहीं देखा। पांडवों को यह बात पसंद नहीं आई। तब कृष्ण ने कहा कि समय आने पर सिद्ध कर दूंगा।
कुछ ही दिनों बाद एक याचक युधिष्ठिर के पास आया और बोला, महाराज! मैं आपके राज्य में रहने वाला एक ब्राह्मण हूं और मेरा व्रत है कि बिना हवन किए कुछ भी नहीं खाता-पीता। कई दिनों से मेरे पास यज्ञ के लिए चंदन की लकड़ी नहीं है। यदि आपके पास हो तो, मुझ पर कृपा करें, अन्यथा हवन तो पूरा नहीं ही होगा, मैं भी भूखा-प्यासा मर जाऊंगा।
युधिष्ठिर ने तुरंत कोषागार के कर्मचारी को बुलवाया और कोष से चंदन की लकड़ी देने का आदेश दिया। संयोग से कोषागार में सूखी लकड़ी नहीं थी। तब महाराज ने भीम व अर्जुन को चंदन की लकड़ी का प्रबंध करने का आदेश दिया। लेकिन काफी दौड़- धूप के बाद भी सूखी लकड़ी की व्यवस्था नहीं हो पाई। तब ब्राह्मण को हताश होते देख कृष्ण ने कहा, मेरे अनुमान से एक स्थान पर आपको लकड़ी मिल सकती है, आइए मेरे साथ।
ब्राह्मण यह सुनकर खुश हो गए। बोला कहां पर। तब भगवान ने अर्जुन व भीम का भी वेष बदलकर ब्राह्मण के संग लेकर चल दिए।। कृष्ण सबको लेकर कर्ण के महल में गए। सभी ब्राह्मणों के वेष में थे, अत: कर्ण ने उन्हें पहचाना नहीं। याचक ब्राह्मण ने जाकर लकड़ी की अपनी वही मांग दोहराई। कर्ण ने भी अपने भंडार के मुखिया को बुलवा कर सूखी लकड़ी देने के लिए कहा, वहां भी सूखी लकड़ी नहीं थी।
ऐसे में ब्राह्मण निराश हो गया। अर्जुन और भीम प्रश्न-सूचक निगाहों से भगवान कृष्ण को ताकने लगे। लेकिन श्री कृष्ण अपनी चिर-परिचित मुस्कान लिए चुपचाप बैठे रहे। तभी कर्ण ने कहा, हे ब्राह्मण देव! आप निराश न हों, एक उपाय है मेरे पास। उसने अपने महल के खिड़की-दरवाजों में लगी चंदन की लकड़ी काट-काट कर ढेर लगा दी, फिर ब्राह्मण से कहा, आपको जितनी लकड़ी चाहिए, कृपया ले जाइए। कर्ण ने लकड़ी ब्राह्मण के घर पहुंचाने का प्रबंध भी कर दिया। ब्राह्मण कर्ण को आशीर्वाद देता हुआ लौट गया। पांडव व श्रीकृष्ण भी लौट आए। वापस आकर भगवान ने कहा, साधारण अवस्था में दान देना कोई विशेषता नहीं है, असाधारण परिस्थिति में किसी के लिए अपने सर्वस्व को त्याग देने का ही नाम दान है। अन्यथा हे युधिष्ठिर! चंदन की लकड़ी के खिड़की-द्वार तो आपके महल में भी थे।

4 यौवन दान दे दिया: किंवदंती है कि एक बार कर्ण ने अपना यौवन ही दान दे दिया था। कथा अनुसार एक बार की बात है दुर्योधन के महल पर भगवान नारायण स्वयं विप्र के वेश में पधारे और दुर्योधन के भिक्षा मांगने लगे।
दुर्योधन के द्वार पर आकर एक विप्र ने अलख जगाई, 'नारायण हरि! भिक्षां देहि!'...
दुर्योधन ने स्वर्ण आदि देकर विप्र का सम्मान करना चाहा तो विप्र ने कहा, 'राजन! मुझे यह सब नहीं चाहिए।'
दुर्योधन ने आश्चर्य से पूछा, 'तो फिर महाराज कैसे पधारे?'
विप्र ने कहा, 'मैं अपनी वृद्धावस्था से दुखी हूं। मैं चारों धाम की यात्रा करना चाहता हूं, जो युवावस्था के स्वस्थ शरीर के बिना संभव नहीं है इसलिए यदि आप मुझे दान देना चाहते हैं तो यौवन दान दीजिए।'
दुर्योधन बोला, 'भगवन्! मेरे यौवन पर मेरी सहधर्मिणी का अधिकार है। आज्ञा हो तो उनसे पूछ आऊं?'
विप्र ने सिर हिला दिया। दुर्योधन अंत:पुर में गया और मुंह लटकाए लौट आया। विप्र ने दुर्योधन के उत्तर की प्रतीक्षा नहीं की। वह स्वत: समझ गए और वहां से चलते बने। उन्होंने सोचा, अब महादानी कर्ण के पास चला जाए। कर्ण के द्वार पहुंच कर विप्र ने अलख जगाई, 'भिक्षां देहि!'
कर्ण तुरंत राजद्वार पर उपस्थित हुआ, विप्रवर! मैं आपका क्या अभीष्ट करूं?'
विप्र ने दुर्योधन से जो निवेदन किया था, वही कर्ण से भी कर दिया। कर्ण उस विप्र को प्रतीक्षा करने की विनय करके पत्नी से परामर्श करने अंदर चला गया लेकिन पत्नी ने कोई न-नुकुर नहीं की। वह बोली, 'महाराज! दानवीर को दान देने के लिए किसी से पूछने की जरूरत क्यों आ पड़ी? आप उस विप्र को नि:संकोच यौवन दान कर दें।' कर्ण ने अविलम्ब यौवन दान की घोषणा कर दी। तब विप्र के शरीर से स्वयं भगवान विष्णु प्रकट हो गए, जो दोनों की परीक्षा लेने गए थे।

5 सोने के दांतों का दान: कर्ण दान करने के लिए काफी प्रसिद्ध था। कहते हैं कि कर्ण जब युद्ध क्षेत्र में आखिरी सांस ले रहा था तो भगवान कृष्ण ने उसकी दानशीलता की परीक्षा लेनी चाही। वे गरीब ब्राह्मण बनकर कर्ण के पास गए और कहा कि तुम्हारे बारे में काफी सुना है और तुमसे मुझे अभी कुछ उपहार चाहिए। कर्ण ने उत्तर में कहा कि आप जो भी चाहें मांग लें। ब्राह्मण ने सोना मांगा।
कर्ण ने कहा कि सोना तो उसके दांत में है और आप इसे ले सकते हैं। ब्राह्मण ने जवाब दिया कि मैं इतना कायर नहीं हूं कि तुम्हारे दांत तोड़ूं। कर्ण ने तब एक पत्थर उठाया और अपने दांत तोड़ लिए। ब्राह्मण ने इसे भी लेने से इंकार करते हुए कहा कि खून से सना हुआ यह सोना वह नहीं ले सकता। कर्ण ने इसके बाद एक बाण उठाया और आसमान की तरफ चलाया। इसके बाद बारिश होने लगी और दांत धुल गया।

Now this chariot will sink here and you will also sink here. Then Indra gave Karna an infallible weapon instead of Kavach Kundal.

But Krishna interrupted him in the middle and said - We have not seen a warrior like Karna anywhere. Pandavas did not like it. Then Krishna said that he will prove it when the time comes.
After a few days, a petitioner came to Yudhishthir and said, Maharaj! I am a Brahmin living in your kingdom and my vow is that I do not eat or drink anything without performing Havan. For many days I do not have sandalwood for Yagya. If you have it, please bless me, otherwise the Havan will not be completed, I will also die of hunger and thirst.
Yudhishthira immediately called the treasury employee and ordered to give sandalwood from the treasury. Incidentally, there was no dry wood in the treasury. Then Maharaj ordered Bhima and Arjuna to arrange sandalwood. But dry wood could not be arranged even after a lot of running. Then seeing the Brahmin getting desperate, Krishna said, I think you can get wood at one place, come with me.
Brahmins were happy to hear this. Said where Then God took Arjuna and Bhima along with the brahmin by changing their clothes. Krishna went to the Karn’s palace along with everyone. All were dressed as Brahmins, so Karna did not recognize them. The supplicant Brahmin went and reiterated his same demand for wood. Karna also called the head of his store and asked him to give dry wood, there was no dry wood there either.
In such a situation, the Brahmin got disappointed. Arjuna and Bhima started staring at Lord Krishna with questioning eyes. But Shri Krishna kept sitting quietly with his familiar smile. That's why Karna said, O Brahmin Dev! Don't be disappointed, I have a solution. He cut and piled the sandalwood wood in the windows and doors of his palace, then said to the Brahmin, please take as much wood as you want. Karna also made arrangements to deliver the wood to the Brahmin's house. The Brahmin returned after blessing Karna. Pandavas and Shri Krishna also returned. Coming back, God said, donating in ordinary circumstances is not a specialty, giving up everything for someone in extraordinary circumstances is called charity. Otherwise O Yudhishthira! Your palace also had windows and doors made of sandalwood.

Karna immediately appeared at the palace, Vipravar! What should I do for you?'
The request that Vipra had made to Duryodhana, he did the same to Karna. Karna went inside to consult his wife, requesting Vipra to wait, but the wife did not respond. She said, ' Maharaj! Why did the need arise to ask someone to donate to Danveer? Feel free to donate youth to that Vipra.' Karna immediately announced the donation of youth. Then Lord Vishnu himself appeared from Vipra's body, who had gone to test both of them.

5. Donation of gold teeth : Karna was quite famous for donating. It is said that when Karna was breathing his last on the battlefield, Lord Krishna wanted to test his charity. He disguised himself as a poor Brahmin and went to Karna and said that he has heard a lot about you and I still want some gifts from you. Karna said in reply that you can ask for whatever you want. Brahmin asked for gold.
Karna said that gold is in his teeth and you can take it. Brahmin replied that I am not so coward to break your teeth. Karna then picked up a stone and broke his teeth. The Brahmin refused to take this too, saying that he cannot take this blood-stained gold. Karna then picked up an arrow and shot it towards the sky. After this it started raining and the teeth got washed away.
