कैसे हुई मां लक्ष्मी की उत्पत्ति और क्या है कथा
विष्णु पुराण के अनुसार, चिरकाल में एक बार ऋषि दुर्वासा ने स्वर्ग के देवता राजा इंद्र को सम्मान में फूलों की माला दी, जिसे राजा इंद्र ने अपने हाथी के सिर पर रख दिया। हाथी ने फूलों की माला को पृथ्वी पर फेंक दिया। यह देख ऋषि दुर्वासा क्रोधित हो उठे और उन्होंने राजा इंद्र को शाप दिया कि आपके इस अहंकार की वजह से आपका पुरुषार्थ क्षीण हो जाएगा और आपका राज-पाट छिन जाएगा।

इसके बाद कालांतर में दानवों का आतंक इतना बढ़ गया कि तीनों लोकों पर दानवों का आधिपत्य हो गया। इस वजह से राजा इंद्र का सिहांसन भी छिन गया। तब देवतागण भगवान विष्णु के शरण में जा पहुंचे। भगवान ने देवताओं को समुद्र मंथन की सलाह देते हुए कहा कि इससे आपको अमृत की प्राप्ति होगी, जिसका पान करने से आप अमर हो जाएंगे। इस अमरत्व की वजह से आप दानवों को युद्ध में परास्त करने में सफल होंगे।
भगवान के वचनानुसार, देवताओं ने दानवों के साथ मिलकर क्षीर सागर में समुद्र मंथन किया, जिससे 14 रत्न सहित अमृत और विष की प्राप्ति हुई। इस समुद्र मंथन से मां लक्ष्मी की भी उत्पत्ति हुई, जिसे भगवान विष्णु ने अर्धांग्नी रूप में धारण किया।

जबकि देवताओं ने अमृत की प्राप्ति हुई, जिसका पान कर देवतागण अमर हो गये। कालांतर में देवताओं ने दानवों को महासंग्राम में परास्त कर अपना राज पाट प्राप्त किया। इस अमरत्व से राजा इंद्र ऋषि दुर्वासा के शाप से भी मुक्त हो गये।

According to the Vishnu Purana, once upon a time sage Durvasa presented a garland of flowers to Indra, the god of heaven, which King Indra placed on the head of his elephant. The elephant threw the garland of flowers on the earth. Seeing this, Sage Durvasa got angry and cursed King Indra that because of this arrogance of yours, your effort will be diminished and your kingdom will be snatched away.

After this, the terror of the demons increased so much that all the three worlds were dominated by the demons. Because of this, the throne of King Indra was also snatched away. Then the deities went to the shelter of Lord Vishnu. God advised the gods to churn the ocean and said that by this you will get nectar, by drinking which you will become immortal. Because of this immortality, you will be able to defeat the demons in battle.
As per the Lord's promise, the deities along with the demons churned the ocean of milk, which resulted in nectar and poison along with 14 gems. Mother Lakshmi also originated from this ocean churning, which Lord Vishnu assumed in the form of Ardhangni.

While the gods got nectar, after drinking which the gods became immortal. In course of time, the gods defeated the demons in a great battle and got their kingdom. With this immortality, King Indra was also freed from the curse of sage Durvasa.
