कैसे हुई सूर्य देव की उत्पत्ति
पुराण के अनुसार, पहले जगत में प्रकाश नहीं था। पूरा जगत ही प्रकाश रहित था। ऐसी स्थिति देख कमलयोनि ब्रह्मा जी प्रकट हुए। कमलयोनी ब्रह्मा जी के मुंह से जो पहला शब्द निकला वो था ॐ। यह सूर्य के तेज का एक छोटा-सा हिस्सा था। इसके बाद ब्रह्मा जी के चारों मुखों से चार वेद प्रकट हुए। ब्रह्मा जी के चार मुखों से चार वेद प्रकट हुए जो ॐ के तेज में एक-रूप हो गए। यह एक-रूप वैदिक तेज ही आदित्य कहलाए। यह विश्व के अविनाशी कारण है। सूर्य ने ब्रह्मा जी की प्रार्थना पर ही अपने तेज को समेटा और स्वल्प तेज को घारण किया।

जब सृष्टि की रचना की गई तो ब्रह्मा जी के पुत्र मरीचि हुए। इनके पुत्र ऋषि कश्यप थे जिनका विवाह अदिति से हुआ था। सूर्य देव को प्रसन्न करने के लिए अदिति ने घोर तप किया। सूर्य ने अदिति की गर्भ में सुषमा नाम की किरण के तौर पर प्रवेश किया। गर्भावस्था के दौरान भी अदिति ने कठोर व्रत जारी रखे। वो चान्द्रायण जैसे कठिन व्रतों का पालन लगातार करती रही। इस पर ऋषि राज कश्यप बहुत क्रोधित हुए। उन्होंने क्रोध में अदिति से कहा कि तुम इतने कठोर उपवास कर रही हो। क्या तुम गर्भस्थ शिशु को मारना चाहती हो।

यह सुनकर देवी अदिति ने दिव्य तेज से प्रज्वल्लित हो रहे बालक को जो उनके गर्भ में पल रहा था, अपने उदर से बाहर कर दिया। उस समय सूर्य देवता शिशु के रूप में अदिति के गर्भ से प्रकट हुए। यह बालक आगे चलकर मार्तंड नाम से विख्यात हुआ। बता दें कि ब्रह्मपुराण में अदिति के गर्भ से जो सूर्य का अंश जन्मा था उसे विवस्वान कहा गया है।

Sage Raj Kashyap got very angry on this. He told Aditi in anger that you are fasting so hard. Do you want to kill the unborn child?

At that time the Sun God appeared from Aditi's womb in the form of a baby. This child later became famous by the name Martand.
