श्रीकृष्ण के प्रिय सखा अर्जुन ने कहा - ""हे कमलनयन! मैं आपको कोटि-कोटि नमन करता हूँ। हे जगदीश्वर! मैं आपसे प्रार्थना करता हूँ कि आप कृपा कर चैत्र माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी कथा का भी वर्णन सुनाइये। इस एकादशी का क्या नाम है? इस व्रत को पहले किसने किया और इसके करने से किस फल की प्राप्ति होती है?"" विष्णु जी का अनमोल भजन: तेरे द्वार खड़ा भगवान
श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा - ""हे अर्जुन! एक बार यही प्रश्न राजा दिलीप ने गुरु वशिष्ठ से किया था, वह वृत्तान्त मैं तुम्हें सुनाता हूँ। राजा दिलीप ने गुरु वशिष्ठ से पूँछा - 'हे गुरुदेव! चैत्र माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी का क्या नाम है? उसमें किस देवता का पूजन होता है तथा उसका क्या विधान है? वह आप कृपापूर्वक बताइये।' विष्णु जी का अनमोल भजन: ॐ जय जगदीश
मुनि वशिष्ठ ने कहा - 'हे राजन! चैत्र माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी का नाम कामदा एकादशी है। यह समस्त पापों को नष्ट करने वाली है। जैसे अग्नि काष्ठ को जलाकर राख कर देती है, वैसे ही कामदा एकादशी के पुण्य के प्रभाव से समस्त पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं और तेजस्वी पुत्र की प्राप्ति होती है। इसके उपवास से मनुष्य निकृष्ट योनि से मुक्त हो जाता है और अन्ततः उसे स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति होती है। अब मैं इस एकादशी का माहात्म्य सुनाता हूँ, ध्यानपूर्वक श्रवण करो- प्राचीन समय में भागीपुर नामक एक नगर था। जिस पर पुण्डरीक नाम का राजा राज्य करता था। राजा पुण्डरीक अनेक ऐश्वर्यों से युक्त था। उसके राज्य में अनेक अप्सराएँ, गन्धर्व, किन्नर आदि वास करते थे। उसी नगर में ललित और ललिता नाम के गायन विद्या में पारन्गत गन्धर्व स्त्री-पुरुष अति सम्पन्न घर में निवास करते हुए विहार किया करते थे। उन दोनों में इतना प्रेम था कि वे अलग हो जाने की कल्पना मात्र से ही व्यथित हो उठते थे। एक बार राजा पुण्डरीक गन्धर्वों सहित सभा में विराजमान थे। वहाँ गन्धर्वों के साथ ललित भी गायन कर रहा था। उस समय उसकी प्रियतमा ललिता वहाँ उपस्थित नहीं थी। गायन करते-करते अचानक उसे उसका ख्याल आ गया, जिसके कारण वह अशुद्ध गायन करने लगा। नागराज कर्कोटक ने राजा पुण्डरीक से उसकी शिकायत की। इस पर राजा को भयंकर क्रोध आया और उन्होंने क्रोधवश ललित को शाप (श्राप) दे दिया - 'अरे नीच! तू मेरे सम्मुख गायन करते हुए भी अपनी स्त्री का स्मरण कर रहा है, इससे तू नरभक्षी दैत्य बनकर अपने कर्म का फल भोग।' विष्णु जी का अनमोल भजन: रट ले हरी का नाम
ललित गन्धर्व उसी समय राजा पुण्डरीक के शाप (श्राप) से एक भयंकर दैत्य में बदल गया। उसका मुख विकराल हो गया। उसके नेत्र सूर्य, चन्द्र के समान प्रदीप्त होने लगे। मुँह से आग की भयंकर ज्वालाएँ निकलने लगीं, उसकी नाक पर्वत की कन्दरा के समान विशाल हो गई और गर्दन पहाड़ के समान दिखायी देने लगी। उसकी भुजाएँ दो-दो योजन लम्बी हो गईं। इस प्रकार उसका शरीर आठ योजन का हो गया। इस तरह राक्षस बन जाने पर वह अनेक दुःख भोगने लगा। अपने प्रियतम ललित का ऐसा हाल होने पर ललिता अथाह दुःख से व्यथित हो उठी। वह अपने पति के उद्धार के लिए विचार करने लगी कि मैं कहाँ जाऊँ और क्या करूँ? किस जतन से अपने पति को इस नरक तुल्य कष्ट से मुक्त कराऊँ? विष्णु जी का अनमोल भजन: हर साँस में हो सुमिरन तेरा
राक्षस बना ललित घोर वनों में रहते हुए अनेक प्रकार के पाप करने लगा। उसकी स्त्री ललिता भी उसके पीछे-पीछे जाती और उसकी हालत देखकर विलाप करने लगती।
एक बार वह अपने पति के पीछे-पीछे चलते हुए विन्ध्याचल पर्वत पर पहुँच गई। उस स्थान पर उसने श्रृंगी मुनि का आश्रम देखा। वह शीघ्रता से उस आश्रम में गई और मुनि के सामने पहुँचकर दण्डवत् प्रणाम कर विनीत भाव से प्रार्थना करने लगी - 'हे महर्षि! मैं वीरधन्वा नामक गन्धर्व की पुत्री ललिता हूँ, मेरा पति राजा पुण्डरीक के शाप (श्राप) से एक भयंकर दैत्य बन गया है। उससे मुझे अपार दुःख हो रहा है। अपने पति के कष्ट के कारण मैं बहुत दुखी हूँ। हे मुनिश्रेष्ठ! कृपा करके आप उसे राक्षस योनि से मुक्ति का कोई उत्तम उपाय बताएँ।' विष्णु जी का अनमोल भजन: भगवान मेरी नैया उस पार लगा देना
समस्त वृत्तान्त सुनकर मुनि श्रृंगी ने कहा - 'हे पुत्री! चैत्र माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी का नाम कामदा एकादशी है। उसके व्रत करने से प्राणी के सभी मनोरथ शीघ्र ही पूर्ण हो जाते हैं।
यदि तू उसके व्रत के पुण्य को अपने पति को देगी तो वह सहज ही राक्षस योनि से मुक्त हो जाएगा और राजा का शाप (श्राप) शान्त हो जाएगा।' विष्णु जी का अनमोल भजन: हरी बोल हरी बोल
ऋषि के कहे अनुसार ललिता ने श्रद्धापूर्वक व्रत किया और द्वादशी के दिन ब्राह्मणों के समक्ष अपने व्रत का फल अपने पति को दे दिया और ईश्वर से प्रार्थना करने लगी - 'हे प्रभु! मैंने जो यह उपवास किया है, उसका फल मेरे पतिदेव को मिले, जिससे उनकी राक्षस योनि से शीघ्र ही मुक्ति हो।' विष्णु जी का अनमोल भजन: श्री हरि स्तोत्रम्
एकादशी का फल देते ही उसका पति राक्षस योनि से मुक्त हो गया और अपने दिव्य स्वरूप को प्राप्त हुआ। वह अनेक सुन्दर वस्त्रों तथा आभूषणों से अलंकृत होकर पहले की भाँति ललिता के साथ विहार करने लगा।
कामदा एकादशी के प्रभाव से वह पहले की भाँति सुन्दर हो गया और मृत्यु के बाद दोनों पुष्पक विमान पर बैठकर विष्णुलोक को चले गये। विष्णु जी का अनमोल भजन: तेरे द्वार खड़ा भगवान
हे अर्जुन! इस उपवास को विधानपूर्वक करने से सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं। इस व्रत के पुण्य से मनुष्य ब्रह्महत्यादि के पाप और राक्षस आदि योनि से मुक्त हो जाते हैं। संसार में इससे उत्तम दूसरा कोई व्रत नहीं है। इसकी कथा व माहात्म्य के श्रवण व पठन से अनन्त फलों की प्राप्ति होती है। विष्णु जी का अनमोल भजन: भजमन नारायण नारायण

प्राणी अपने सुखों का चिन्तन करे, यह बुरा नहीं है, किन्तु समय-असमय ऐसा चिन्तन प्राणी को उसके दायित्वों से विमुख कर देता है, जिससे उसे भयंकर कष्ट भोगने पड़ते हैं। गन्धर्व ललित ने भी राक्षस होकर निन्दित कर्म किये और कष्ट भोगे, परन्तु भगवान श्रीहरि की अनुकम्पा का कोई अन्त नहीं है।" विष्णु जी का अनमोल भजन: चलो विष्णु धाम

Muni Vashishtha said - 'O Rajan! The name of Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month is Kamda Ekadashi. It is going to destroy all the sins. As fire burns wood to ashes, in the same way all sins are destroyed by the virtue of Kamda Ekadashi and a bright son is born. By its fasting man becomes free from the worst form of life and ultimately he attains heaven. Now I narrate the greatness of this Ekadashi, listen carefully- In ancient times there was a city named Bhagipur. On which the king named Pundarik used to rule. King Pundrik was endowed with many opulences. Many Apsaras, Gandharva, Kinnar etc used to live in his kingdom. In the same city, Gandharva women and men, well-versed in singing, named Lalit and Lalita, used to live in a very prosperous house. They were so much in love that they used to get upset at the mere thought of separation. Once King Pundrik was sitting in the assembly along with the Gandharvas. Lalit was also singing there along with the Gandharvas. At that time his beloved Lalita was not present there. While singing, he suddenly thought of her, due to which he started singing impure. Nagraj Karkotak complained about him to King Pundarik. The king got very angry on this and in anger he cursed Lalit - 'Oh wretch! Lalit Gandharva at the same time turned into a fierce demon by the curse (curse) of King Pundarika. His face turned grim. His eyes started shining like the sun and the moon. Fierce flames of fire started coming out of his mouth, his nose became huge like a mountain's cave and his neck became visible like a mountain. His arms became sixteen miles long. In this way his body became of sixty four miles. In this way, after becoming a demon, he started suffering a lot. Lalita was distressed with immense sorrow when her beloved Lalit was in such a condition. She started thinking for the salvation of her husband, where should I go and what should I do? Lalit became a demon and started committing many kinds of sins while living in the dense forests. His wife Lalita also followed him and started lamenting seeing his condition.
Once she followed her husband and reached Vindhyachal mountain. At that place she saw the hermitage of Shringi Muni. She quickly went to that ashram and after reaching in front of Muni, bowed down and started praying humbly - 'O Maharishi! I am Lalita, the daughter of a Gandharva named Virdhanva, my husband has become a fierce demon due to the curse of King Pundarika. It is making me very sad. After listening to the whole story, Muni Shringi said - 'O daughter! The name of Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month is Kamda Ekadashi. By observing its fast, all the wishes of the creature are fulfilled soon.
If you give the virtue of this fast to your husband, he will easily be freed from the demon's form and the king's curse (curse) will be calmed.' Precious hymn of Lord Vishnu: Bhagwan Meri Naiya Us Paar Laga Dena
According to the sage, Lalita fasted with devotion and on the day of Dwadashi gave the fruit of her fast to her husband in front of Brahmins and started praying to God - 'O Lord! As soon as the fruit of Ekadashi was given, her husband was freed from the demon form and attained his divine form. Decorated with many beautiful clothes and ornaments, he started walking with Lalita like before.

Hey Arjun! By observing this fast lawfully, all sins are destroyed. By virtue of this fast, man becomes free from the sins of Brahmahatyadi and demons etc. There is no better fast than this in the world. It is not bad for a creature to think about its pleasures, but untimely such thinking distracts the creature from its responsibilities, due to which it has to suffer a lot.
