क्यों हुआ था समुद्र मंथन?
हिंदू धर्म में बहुत सारी देवताओं और असुरों के युद्ध की कथाएं प्रचलित हैं। मगर, सबसे ज्यादा जिस कथा के बारे में लोग जानते हैं वह है ‘समुद्र मंथन’। समुद्र मंथन पहला ऐसा काम था जिसे देवताओं और असुरों ने मिलकर किया था। इससे पहले असुरों को देवताओं से हमेश लड़ते हुए ही देखा गया था। अधिकांश लोगों को यही पता है कि समुद्र मंथन पृथ्वी के निर्माण के लिए हुआ था। मगर, विष्णु पुराण में समुद्र मंथन की कुछ और ही कथा छुपी हुई है। समुद्र मंथन का कारण था देवी लक्ष्मी की खोज। देवी लक्ष्मी के क्षीर सागर में विलुप होने के बाद जब उनकी तलाश की गई तब हुआ था समुद्र मंथन।
कथा के अनुसार जब बृह्मा जी ने भगवान विष्णु से पृथ्वी के निर्माण के विषय में बात की तब एक बार फिर भगवान विषणु और देवी लक्ष्मी को एक दूसरे से बिछड़ना पड़ा। उस वक्त देवी लक्ष्मी नाराज हो कर क्षीर सागर की गहराइयों में समाहित हो गई। वहीं भगवान विषणु पृथ्वी लोक को बसाने के बारे में विचार करने लगे। तब पृथ्वी के लगभग पूरे हिस्से में पानी ही पानी था।

ऐसे में उसे बसाने के लिए बहुत सारी वस्तुओं की जरूरत थी। यह वस्तुएं क्षीर सागर में छुपे हुए थे। तब भगवान विष्णु ने तय किया कि वह समुद्र का मंथन कराएंगे। मगर, इस मंथन के लिए न तो देवता गण तैयार थे और नहीं वह इसे अकेले कर पाने में समर्थ थे। वहीं दूसरी तरफ देवी लक्ष्मी के रुष्ट होने से पूरे बृह्मांड में सभी देवता और असुर श्रीहीन हो गए थे। सभी चाहते थे कि देवी लक्ष्मी वापिस आ जाएं।
भगवान विष्णु ने तब देवताओं को श्री का लोभ और असुरों को अमृत का लोभ दे कर समुद्र मंथन के लिए तैयार किया था। इसके बावजूद समुद्र को मथना आसान नहीं था। तब भगवान विष्णु ने अपनी माया से मंदार पर्वत को समुद्र के बीचो बीच ला खड़ा किया। इसके बाद मंदार पर्वत से समुद्र को मथने के लिए एक मजबूत रस्सी की जरूरत थी। तब भगवान विष्णु ने भगवान शिव से उनके गले में वास करने वाले नाग वासुकी को समुद्र मंथन के लिए देने के लिए आग्रह किया। इसके बाद बारी आई कि वासुकी के मुंह का हिस्सा कौन पकड़गा और पूछ का हिस्सा कौन पकड़ेगा। वासुकी के मुंह से जैहरीली हवा निकलती थी मगर वह हिस्सा मजबूत था। वहीं पूंछ का हिस्सा कमजोर था। तब असुरों ने तय किया कि वह मजबूत भाग को पकड़ेंगे। हालाकि यह भगवान विषणु की एक चाल थी।

इसके बाद बारी आई कि मंदार पर्वत के भार को कौन उठाएगा। तब भगवान विष्णु ने कछुए का रूप धारण किया और अपनी पीठ पर मंदार पर्वत को रख लिया। तब कई वर्षों तक समुद्र मंथन का काम चलता रहा। तब जाकर सबसे पहले मंथन से हलाहल निकला। इसे भगवान शिव ने पी लिया। तब ही से उन्हें नीलकंठ कहा जाने लगा। इसके बाद कामधेनू गाय, उच्चैश्रवा घोड़ा, ऐरावत हाथी, कौस्तुभमणि हीरा, कल्पवृष पेड़ और ऐसे 13 रत्न निकले। सबसे आखिर में देवी लक्ष्मी समुद्र मंथन से निकलीं। जैसे ही देवी लक्षमी समुद्र से बाहर आईं सभी देवताओं के गहने और धन वापिस आ गया।

According to the legend, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi once again had to be separated from each other when Lord Brahma spoke to Lord Vishnu about the creation of the earth. At that time Goddess Lakshmi got angry and got absorbed in the depths of Kshir Sagar. At the same time, Lord Vishnu started thinking about settling the earth. Then there was only water in almost the entire part of the earth.

In such a situation, many things were needed to settle it. These things were hidden in Kshir Sagar. Then Lord Vishnu decided that he would churn the ocean. But, neither the deities were ready for this churning nor were they able to do it alone. On the other hand, due to the anger of Goddess Lakshmi, all the deities and asuras in the entire universe had become headless. Everyone wanted Goddess Lakshmi to come back.
Lord Vishnu then prepared the gods for the churning of the ocean by giving the greed of Sri and the greed of nectar to the demons. Despite this, it was not easy to churn the ocean. Then Lord Vishnu made the Mandar mountain stand in the middle of the ocean with his illusion. After this, a strong rope was needed to churn the ocean from Mount Mandar. Then Lord Vishnu requested Lord Shiva to give him the serpent Vasuki who resided in his neck to churn the ocean. After this it was the turn that who would hold the part of Vasuki's mouth and who would hold the tail part. Poisonous air used to come out of Vasuki's mouth but that part was strong. And the tail part was weak. Then the Asuras decided that they would capture the stronger part. Although it was a trick of Lord Vishnu.

After this the turn came that who would carry the weight of Mandar Parvat. Then Lord Vishnu took the form of a tortoise and placed Mandar Parvat on his back. Then the work of churning the ocean continued for many years. After that, first of all, Halahal emerged from the churning. Lord Shiva drank it. Since then he came to be known as Neelkanth. After this Kamdhenu cow, Uchchaishrava horse, Airavat elephant, Kaustubhamani diamond, Kalpavrish tree and 13 such gems came out. At last, Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the churning of the ocean. As soon as Goddess Lakshmi came out of the sea, the ornaments and wealth of all the deities came back.
