क्यों मनाई जाती है होलिका दहन क्या है इसके पीछे की कथा
एक समय की बात है धरती पर हिरणकश्यप नाम का एक बड़ा ही दुष्ट राक्षस् रहा करता था, हिरणकश्यप अमर होना चाहता था इसलिए उसने कई वर्षों तक ब्रह्मा जी की कठोर तपस्या करके वरदान मँगा कि उसे ना कोई दिन में मार सके, ना रात में, न दिन में, उसे ना कोई मनुष्य मार सके ना कोई जानवर, ना ही कोई देव न कोई दानव उसे न कोई शस्त्र से मार सके न कोई अस्त्र से मार सके ईश्वर से ऐसा वरदान पाने के बाद अब हिरण कश्यप खुद को अमर समझने लगा था,

वरदान प्राप्त करने के बाद जब वो अपने राज्य में वापस लौटा तब उसने चारों तरफ हाहाकार मचा दिया,,, उसने कहा कि अब कोई भी भगवान की पूजा नहीं करेगा,,, सब मेरी यानी की हिरणकश्यप की पूजा करेंगे,,, लोग डर के मारे हिरणकश्यप की पूजा करना आरंभ कर देते हैं,,, लेकिन तभी एक दिन हिरणकश्यप को अपने ही महल के कोने से भगवान विष्णु की पूजा अर्चना की ध्वनि सुनाई देती है,,, हिरण कश्यप बड़ा हैरान हो जाता है कि पूरा राज्य उसकी पूजा कर रहा है और उसके ही महल में कोई ऐसा मौजूद है जो हिरणकश्यप को छोड़कर भगवान विष्णु की पूजा कर रहा है,,, जब वो उस ध्वनि के पास जाता है तो बड़ा आश्चर्यचकित हो जाता है,,, कि उसका खुद का पुत्र प्रहलाद ही भगवान विष्णु की पूजा कर रहा होता है,,,

यह देखने के बाद हिरण कश्यप ग़ुस्से से आग बबूला हो जाता है,,, वो पहले अपने पुत्र को समझाने का प्रयास करता है कि वो भगवान विष्णु को छोड़कर हिरणकश्यप की पूजा करें क्योंकि वो उसके पिता है और भगवान भी ,,, लेकिन प्रहलाद साफ-साफ मना कर देता है,,, वो कहता है कि पिताजी पूरे संसार में भगवान श्री हरि से बढ़कर कोई नहीं है वही सबके परम पिता है,,, तब हिरण कश्यप गुस्से से आगबबूला हो जाता है,,, और अपने सैनिकों को आदेश देता है कि प्रहलाद को मार दो,,,सैनिक प्रहलाद पर तरह-तरह के हथियारों से हमला करते हैं,,, लेकिन भगवान विष्णु की कृपा से प्रहलाद हर बार बच जाता है,,,
सैनिकों के हमले से जब प्रहलाद को कुछ नहीं होता तब हिरण कश्यप प्रहलाद को जहरीले साँपों के बीच में छुड़वा देता है,,, लेकिन भगवान विष्णु की कृपा से साँप भी प्रहलाद को बिना कुछ किए वहाँ से चुपचाप लौट जाते हैं,, यह देखकर हिरणकश्यप और ज्यादा आग बबूला हो जाता है,,,अंत में कोई उपाय ना मिलने पर वो सैनिकों को आदेश देता है कि प्रहलाद को पागल हाथी के सामने छोड़ दो,,, पागल हाथी खुद-ब-खुद प्रहलाद को मार देगा,,, लेकिन जैसे ही प्रहलाद को पागल हाथी के सामने छोड़ा जाता है,,, वो हाथी ठीक हो जाता है और प्रहलाद को सूंड से उठाकर अपने पीठ पर बिठा लेता है

किसी भी तरीके से पुत्र को ना मार पाने पर हिरण कश्यप उदास होकर अपने कक्ष में बैठा होता है तभी उसकी बहन होलिका आती है,,, और अपने भाई के उदास होने का कारण पूछती है,,, जिस पर हिरणकश्यप उसे सारी कहानी बता देता है,,, तब होलिका हंसती है हुए कहती है कि भैया अब बस इतनी सी बात,,, आपको पता है ना कि मुझे भगवान ब्रह्मा से एक ऐसा वस्त्र मिला है जिसे ओढ़ने के बाद मुझे कोई अग्नि जला नहीं सकती,,, आप मुझे बस आदेश दीजिए मैं प्रहलाद को अपने साथ गोद में बिठा कर जलती अग्नि में बैठ जाऊंगी,,, और प्रहलाद जलकर भस्म हो जाएगा,,, यह सुनकर हिरणकश्यप काफी प्रसन्न हो जाता है और सैनिकों को चीता का प्रबंध करने का आदेश देता है

अगले दिन जैसे ही होलिका प्रहलाद को अपनी गोद में बिठाकर चिता पर बैठती है,,, तो कुछ ही देर के बाद वो जादुई कपड़ा होलिका के ऊपर से हटकर प्रहलाद के ऊपर आ जाता है,,, और होलिका जलकर राख हो जाती है,, और प्रहलाद सुरक्षित वापस आ जाता है,,,और इसी दिन से अधर्म पर धर्म की विजय के रूप में लोग होलिका दहन को मनाते आ रहे हैं

When nothing happens to Prahlad due to the attack of the soldiers, the deer Kashyap releases Prahlad in the midst of poisonous snakes,,, but by the grace of Lord Vishnu, the snakes also return quietly from there without doing anything to Prahlad,, Seeing this, Hiranyakashyap He gets more and more enraged,,, at the end, when no solution is found, he orders the soldiers to leave Prahlad in front of the mad elephant,,, the mad elephant will kill Prahlad on its own,,, but As soon as Prahlad is released in front of a mad elephant, that elephant gets cured and lifts Prahlad by its trunk and makes him sit on its back.

Hiranakashyap is sitting in his room sad after not being able to kill his son in any way, then his sister Holika comes,,, and asks the reason for her brother's sadness,,, on which Hiranakashyap tells her the whole story.
