महाशिवरात्रि व्रत कथा
एक बार चित्रभानु नामक एक शिकारी था। जो पशुओं की हत्या करके अपना परिवार चलाता था। वो शिकारी एक साहूकार का ऋणी था, लेकिन ऋण समय पर न चुका सकने पर क्रोधित साहूकार ने उसको शिवमठ में बंदी बना लिया था। लेकिन संयोग से उस दिन शिवरात्रि थी। बंदी शिकारी मठ में शिव से जुड़ी धार्मिक बातें सुनता रहा, वहीं उसने शिवरात्रि व्रत की कथा भी सुनी। शाम होने पर साहूकार ने शिकारी बुलाया और ऋण चुकाने के लिए पूछा तो शिकारी अगले दिन सारा ऋण लौटाने का वचन देकर वहां से चला गया। शिकारी जंगल में शिकार के लिए निकला। लेकिन दिनभर बंदी रहने के कारण वो भूख-प्यास से व्याकुल हो उठा।

सूर्यास्त होने पर वह एक जलाशय के पास गया जहां एक घाट के किनारे एक पेड़ पर थोड़ा सा जल पीने के लिए लेकर चढ़ गया। उसे पूरी उम्मीद थी कि कोई न कोई जानवर इस जलाशय पर अपनी प्यास बुझाने के लिए ज़रूर आयेगा। जहां वो शिकारी आराम कर रहा था वो पेड़ बेल-पत्र का था और उसी पेड़ के नीचे शिवलिंग भी था जो सूखे बेलपत्रों से ढके होने के कारण दिखाई नहीं दे रहा था। भूख और प्यास से थका वो उसी मचान पर बैठ गया।
मचान बनाते समय उसने जो टहनियां तोड़ीं, वे संयोग से शिवलिंग पर जा गिरीं। इस प्रकार दिनभर भूखे-प्यासे शिकारी का व्रत भी हो गया और शिवलिंग पर बेलपत्र भी चढ़ गए।
जानिये कैसे हुआ हनुमान जी का जन्म : हनुमान जन्म कथा
एक पहर रात्रि बीत जाने पर एक गर्भिणी मृगी तालाब पर पानी पीने के लिए आई। शिकारी ने धनुष पर तीर चढ़ाकर जैसे ही प्रत्यंचा खींची उसके हाथ के धक्के से कुछ पत्ते और जल की कुछ बूंदे शिवलिंग पर जा गिरीं और अनजाने में ही शिकारी की पहले प्रहर की पूजा भी संपन्न हो गई।
मृगी बोली, मैं गर्भिणी हूं शीघ्र ही प्रसव करूंगी। तुम एक साथ दो जीवों की हत्या करोगे, जो ठीक नहीं है। मैं बच्चे को जन्म देकर शीघ्र ही तुम्हारे पास वापस आ जाऊंगी, तब मुझे मार लेना। शिकारी ने प्रत्यंचा ढीली कर दी और मृगी जंगली झाड़ियों में लुप्त हो गई।

कुछ ही देर बाद एक और मृगी उधर से निकली। शिकारी ने फिर धनुष पर बाण चढ़ाया। कुछ बेलपत्र फिर से उससे अनजाने में ही नीचे शिवलिंग पर जा गिरे इस तरह से उसकी दूसरे प्रहर की पूजा भी हो गयी।
तब उसे देख मृगी ने विनम्रतापूर्वक निवेदन किया कि मैं थोड़ी देर पहले ऋतु से निवृत्त हुई हूं। कामातुर विरहिणी हूं। अपने प्रिय की खोज में भटक रही हूं। मैं अपने पति से मिलकर शीघ्र ही तुम्हारे आ जाऊंगी। शिकारी ने उसे भी जाने दिया।
दो बार शिकार को खोकर वो परेशान हो गया। रात्रि का आखिरी पहर बीत रहा था। तभी एक अन्य मृगी अपने बच्चों के साथ उधर से निकली। शिकारी धनुष पर तीर चढ़ा कर छोड़ने ही वाला था कि मृगी बोली मैं इन बच्चों को इनके पिता को देकर तुम्हारे पास तुरंत लौट आऊंगी। इस समय मुझे मत मारो।

शिकारी हंसा और बोला, सामने आए शिकार को छोड़ दूं, मैं ऐसा मूर्ख नहीं। इससे पहले भी मैं दो बार अपना शिकार खो चुका हूं। मेरे बच्चे भूख-प्यास से तड़प रहे होंगे। उत्तर में मृगी ने फिर कहा, जैसे तुम्हें अपने बच्चों की ममता सता रही है वैसे ही मुझे भी इनकी फिक्र है इसलिए सिर्फ बच्चों के नाम पर मैं थोड़ी देर के लिए जीवनदान मांग रही हूं। मृगी का दीन स्वर सुनकर शिकारी को उस पर दया आ गई। उसने उस मृगी को भी जाने दिया।
शिकार के अभाव में बेल-वृक्षपर बैठा शिकारी बेलपत्र तोड़-तोड़कर नीचे फेंकता जा रहा था। इस तरह से उस शिकारी की तीसरे पहर की पूजा भी हो गई।

सूर्योदय से कुछ समय पहले एक हृष्ट-पुष्ट मृग उसी रास्ते पर आया। शिकारी ने सोच लिया कि अब वो इसका शिकार अवश्य करेगा। शिकारी की तनी प्रत्यंचा देखकर मृगविनीत स्वर में बोला, भाई! यदि तुमने मुझसे पूर्व आने वाली तीन मृगियों और छोटे-छोटे बच्चों को मार डाला है, तो मुझे भी मारने में विलंब न करो, ताकि मुझे उनके वियोग में दुःख न सहना पड़े। मैं उन मृगियों का पति हूं। यदि तुमने उन्हें जीवनदान दिया है तो मुझे भी कुछ क्षण का जीवन देने की कृपा करो। मैं उनसे मिलकर तुम्हारे समक्ष उपस्थित हो जाऊंगा।
मृग की बात सुन कर शिकारी ने सारी कथा मृग को सुना दी। तब मृग ने कहा मेरी तीनों पत्नियां जिस प्रकार प्रतिज्ञाबद्ध होकर गई हैं, वे मेरी मृत्यु से अपने धर्म का पालन नहीं कर पाएंगी। जैसे तुमने उन्हें विश्वासपात्र मानकर छोड़ा है वैसे ही मुझे भी जाने दो। मैं उन सबके साथ शीघ्र ही यहां उपस्थित होता हूं।
कैसे हुआ श्री कृष्ण का जन्म जानिए इस कथा के माध्यम से: भगवान कृष्ण के जन्म की कथा
उपवास, रात्रि-जागरण तथा शिवलिंग पर बेलपत्र चढ़ने से शिकारी का हिंसक हृदय अब निर्मल हो गया था। उसमें भगवद् शक्ति का वास हो गया था। उसके हाथ से धनुष का बाण छूट गया और उसने मृग को जाने दिया। थोड़ी ही देर बाद वह मृग सपरिवार शिकारी के समक्ष उपस्थित हो गया किंतु जंगली पशुओं की ऐसी सत्यता, सात्विकता और सामूहिक प्रेमभावना देखकर शिकारी को अपने पर ग्लानि हुई। उसके नेत्रों से आंसुओं की झड़ी लग गई। उस मृग परिवार को न मारकर शिकारी ने अपने कठोर हृदय को जीव हिंसा से सदा के लिए हटा दिया।
देवलोक से समस्त देव समाज भी इस घटना को देख रहे थे। उसके ऐसा करने पर शंकर जी ने प्रसन्न हो कर तत्काल उसे अपने दिव्य स्वरूप में दर्शन दिए और उसे सुख-समृद्धि का वरदान देकर गुह नाम प्रदान किया। यही वह गुह था जिसके साथ भगवान् श्री राम ने मित्रता की थी।
इस प्रकार महा शिवरात्रि पूजन पौराणिक व्रत कथा समाप्त हुई। ॐ नमः पार्वती पतये हर हर महादेव !

Once upon a time there was a hunter named Chitrabhanu. Who used to run his family by killing animals. That hunter was indebted to a moneylender, but the angry moneylender imprisoned him in Shivmath for not being able to repay the loan on time. But coincidentally that day was Shivratri. Bandi Shikari kept listening to religious talks related to Shiva in the Math, where he also heard the story of Shivratri fast. In the evening, the moneylender called the hunter and asked him to repay the loan, then the hunter went away promising to return the entire loan the next day. The hunter went out to hunt in the forest. But due to being imprisoned for the whole day, he became distraught with hunger and thirst.

At sunset he went to a water body where he climbed a tree on the edge of a ghat to take some water to drink. He had full hope that some animal would definitely come to this reservoir to quench his thirst. Where that hunter was resting, that tree was of bel-patra and under the same tree there was also a Shivling which was not visible because it was covered with dry bel-patra. Tired of hunger and thirst, he sat on the same platform.
The twigs he broke while making the scaffolding accidentally fell on the Shivling. In this way, the fasting of the hungry and thirsty hunter was also done for the whole day and Bel leaves were also mounted on the Shivling.

After one o'clock in the night, a pregnant epilepsy came to drink water at the pond. As soon as the hunter put an arrow on the bow and pulled the string, some leaves and a few drops of water fell on the Shivling with the push of his hand and unknowingly the worship of the first phase of the hunter was also completed.
Mrigi said, I am pregnant, I will give birth soon. You will be killing two souls at the same time, which is not right. I will come back to you soon after giving birth to the child, then kill me. The hunter loosened the noose and the antelope disappeared into the wild bushes.

After some time, another epilepsy came out from there. The hunter then put an arrow on the bow. Unknowingly, some belpatra again fell down on the Shivling, in this way it was worshiped in the second phase.
Then seeing him, Mrigi humbly requested that I had retired from the season a while ago. I am a sensual virgin. I am wandering in search of my beloved. I will come to you soon after meeting my husband. The hunter let him go as well
He got upset after losing the prey twice. It was the last hour of the night. Then another epilepsy came out from there with her children. The hunter was about to leave the arrow on the bow when the epilepsy said, I will give these children to their father and return to you immediately. Don't hit me this time

The hunter laughed and said, leave the prey in front, I am not such a fool. Even before this I have lost my prey twice. My children must be suffering from hunger and thirst. In reply, Mrigi again said, just as you are troubled by the love of your children, in the same way, I am also worried about them, so only in the name of children, I am asking for life for a while. Hearing the humble voice of the epilepsy, the hunter felt pity on him. He let that chicken escape too.
In the absence of prey, the hunter sitting on the vine-tree was breaking the leaves and throwing them down. In this way, the worship of that hunter in the third hour was also done.
Shortly before sunrise, a well-built antelope came on the same path. The hunter thought that now he would definitely hunt it. Seeing the trunk of the hunter, the antelope said in a melodious voice, brother! If you have killed three epilepsy and small children coming before me, then do not delay in killing me too, so that I do not have to suffer in their separation. I am the husband of those epilepsy. If you have given them life, then please give me a few moments of life too. I will appear before you after meeting him.

After listening to the antelope, the hunter told the whole story to the antelope. Then the antelope said that the way my three wives have gone with a vow, they will not be able to follow their religion after my death. Just as you have left him as a confidant, let me go as well. I am present here soon with all of them.
The violent heart of the hunter had now become pure by fasting, staying awake at night and offering beltpatra on the Shivling. Bhagavad Shakti had resided in him. The arrow of the bow was released from his hand and he let go of the deer. After a while, the deer appeared in front of the hunter with his family, but seeing such truthfulness, truthfulness and collective love of wild animals, the hunter felt guilty. Tears started flowing from his eyes. By not killing that deer family, the hunter removed his hard heart from animal violence forever.
