महाभारत की कहानी: अर्जुन और चिड़िया की आंख
यह द्वापरयुग के उन दिनों की बात है, जब पांचों पांडव और कौरव पुत्र, गुरु द्रोणाचार्य से अपनी शिक्षा ग्रहण कर रहे थे। उन दिनों पांडव धनुर्विद्या का ज्ञान प्राप्त कर रहे थे। एक दिन गुरु द्रोणाचार्य ने उनकी परीक्षा लेने का विचार किया। परीक्षा के लिए गुरुदेव ने पांचों पांडव – युद्धिष्ठिर, भीम, अर्जुन, नकुल और सहदेव के साथ-साथ कौरवों को भी जंगल में बुलाया और एक पेड़ के सामने ले जाकर खड़ा कर दिया और कहा, “शिष्यों, आज आप सभी की परीक्षा का दिन है। आज इस बात की परीक्षा होगी कि मेरे द्वारा दी गई धनुर्विद्या से आप सभी ने कितना सीखा है।”

इसके बाद, गुरु द्रोणाचार्य ने उस पेड़ की तरफ इशारा करते हुए कहा, “वहां देखो, उस पेड़ पर एक नकली चिड़िया लटकी है। मैं चाहता हूं कि आप सभी एक-एक करके, उस मछली की आंख पर निशाना लगाएं और तीर सीधा आंख के बीचों-बीच, उसकी पुतली पर जाकर लगना चाहिए। क्या आप सभी समझ गए?” इस पर सभी ने सहमती में अपनी सिर हिला दिया।

गुरु द्रोणाचार्य ने सबसे पहले युद्धिष्ठिर को आगे बुलाया और तीर कमान उसके हाथों में थमाते हुए उससे पूछा, “वत्स, तुम्हें इस समय क्या-क्या दिख रहा है?” इस पर युद्धिष्ठिर ने जवाब दिया, “गुरुदेव, आप, मेरे भाई, यह जंगल, पेड़, पेड़ पर बैठी चिड़िया व पत्ते आदि सब कुछ दिख रहा है।” यह सुनकर द्रोणाचार्य ने युद्धिष्ठिर के हाथ से तीर कमान ले लिया और कहा कि वह इस परीक्षा के लिए अभी तैयार नहीं है।

इसके बाद, उन्होंने भीम को आगे बुलाया और उसके हाथों में तीर-कमान थमा दिया। फिर उन्होंने भीम से पूछा कि उसे क्या-क्या दिख रहा है। इस पर भीम ने जवाब दिया कि उसे भी गुरु द्रोणाचार्य, उसके भाई, पेड़, चिड़िया, धरती व आसमान सब कुछ दिख रहा है। गुरु द्रोणाचार्य ने उसके हाथों से भी धनुष-बाण वापस ले लिया और उसे अपने स्थान पर जा कर खड़े रहने को कह दिया।

इस प्रकार गुरुदेव ने एक-एक करके नकुल, सहदेव और सभी कौरव पुत्रों को बुलाया और उनके हाथों में धनुष-बाण थमाते हुए, उनसे भी यही सवाल पूछा। उन सभी का जवाब भी कुछ इस प्रकार ही आया कि उन्हें गुरुदेव, भाई, जंगल, उसके आसपास की चीजें व पेड़ आदि दिख रहे हैं। इन जवाबों के बाद उन्होंने सभी को अपने-अपने स्थान पर वापस भेज दिया।

आखिरी में अर्जुन की बारी आई। गुरुदेव ने उसे आगे बुलाया और धनुष-बाण उसके हाथों में दे दिया। फिर उन्होंने अर्जुन से पूछा, “वत्स बताओ कि तुम्हें क्या दिख रहा है?” अर्जुन ने कहा, “मुझे उस चिड़िया की आंख दिख रही है, गुरुदेव”। गुरुदेव ने पूछा, “और क्या दिख रहा है तुम्हें, अर्जुन?” “मुझे उस चिड़िया की आंख के अलावा कुछ नहीं दिख रहा, गुरुवर,” अर्जुन ने कहा। यह सुनकर कि अर्जुन चिड़िया की आंख के अलावा कुछ नहीं देख रहा, गुरु द्रोणाचार्य मुस्कुराए और कहा, “तुम इस परीक्षा के लिए तैयार हो। निशाना लगाओ, वत्स।” गुरु का आदेश मिलते ही अर्जुन ने चिड़िया की आंख पर तीर मारा और तीर सीधे उसके लक्ष्य पर जाकर लगा।

Guru Dronacharya first called Yudhishthira forward and handed over the bow and arrow to him and asked him, “Vats, what are you seeing at this time?” To this Yudhishthira replied, “Gurudev, you, my brother, this forest, trees, birds sitting on trees and leaves etc. everything is visible.” Hearing this, Dronacharya took the bow and arrow from Yudhishthira's hand and said that he was not yet ready for this test.

After this, he called Bhima forward and put the bow and arrows in his hands. Then he asked Bhima what he was seeing. To this Bhima replied that he too could see Guru Dronacharya, his brothers, trees, birds, earth and sky. Guru Dronacharya also took back the bow and arrows from his hands and told him to go to his place and stand.

Thus Gurudev called Nakula, Sahadeva and all the Kaurava sons one by one and asked them the same question, placing bow and arrows in their hands. The answer of all of them also came in such a way that they are seeing Gurudev, brother, forest, things and trees around it etc. After these answers he sent everyone back to their respective places.

At last it was Arjun's turn. Gurudev called him forward and gave the bow and arrows in his hands. Then he asked Arjuna, "Watts, tell me what you are seeing?" Arjun said, "I can see the eye of that bird, Gurudev". Gurudev asked, "What else are you seeing, Arjun?" “I cannot see anything except the eye of that bird, Master,” said Arjuna. Hearing that Arjuna was seeing nothing but the eye of a bird, Guru Dronacharya smiled and said, “You are ready for this test. Hit the target, Vats." Arjun shot an arrow at the bird's eye as soon as he got the Guru's order and the arrow went straight to its target.
