मंगला गौरी व्रत की कथा
पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, एक समय की बात है एक शहर में धरमपाल नाम का एक व्यापारी रहता था। उसकी पत्नी काफी खूबसूरत थी और उसके पास काफी संपत्ति थी। लेकिन उनके कोई संतान नहीं होने के कारण वे काफी दुखी रहा करते थे। ईश्वर की कृपा से उनको एक पुत्र की प्राप्ति हुई लेकिन वह अल्पायु था।
उसे यह श्राप मिला था कि 16 वर्ष की उम्र में सांप के काटने से उसकी मौत हो जाएगी। संयोग से उसकी शादी 16 वर्ष से पहले ही एक युवती से हुई जिसकी माता मंगला गौरी व्रत किया करती थी। परिणामस्वरूप उसने अपनी पुत्री के लिए एक ऐसे सुखी जीवन का आशीर्वाद प्राप्त किया था, जिसके कारण वह कभी विधवा नहीं हो सकती थी। अत: अपनी माता के इसी व्रत के प्रताप से धरमपाल की बहु को अखंड सौभाग्य की प्राप्ति हुई।

इस वजह से धरमपाल के पुत्र ने 100 साल की लंबी आयु प्राप्त की। तभी से ही मंगला गौरी व्रत की शुरुआत मानी गई है। इस कारण से सभी नवविवाहित महिलाएं इस पूजा को करती हैं तथा गौरी व्रत का पालन करती हैं और अपने लिए एक लंबी, सुखी तथा स्थायी वैवाहिक जीवन की कामना करती हैं।
जो महिला उपवास का पालन नहीं कर सकतीं, वे भी कम से कम पूजा तो करती ही हैं। इस कथा को सुनने के बाद विवाहित महिला अपनी सास तथा ननद को 16 लड्डू देती है। इसके बाद वे यही प्रसाद ब्राह्मण को भी देती है। इस विधि को पूरा करने के बाद व्रती 16 बाती वाले दीये से देवी की आरती करती है। व्रत के दूसरे दिन बुधवार को देवी मंगला गौरी की प्रतिमा को नदी या पोखर में विसर्जित कर दी जाती है।

अंत में मां गौरी के सामने हाथ जोड़कर अपने समस्त अपराधों के लिए एवं पूजा में हुई भूल-चूक के लिए क्षमा मांगना चाहिए। इस व्रत और पूजा को परिवार की खुशी के लिए लगातार 5 वर्षों तक किया जाता है। अत: शास्त्रों के अनुसार यह मंगला गौरी व्रत नियमों के अनुसार करने से प्रत्येक मनुष्य के वैवाहिक सुख में बढ़ोतरी होकर पुत्र-पौत्रादि भी अपना जीवन सुखपूर्वक गुजारते हैं, ऐसी इस व्रत की महिमा है।

Mangala Gauri Vrat Katha According to the legend, once upon a time there lived a merchant named Dharampal in a city. His wife was very beautiful and had a lot of wealth. But he used to be very sad because he had no children. By the grace of God he was blessed with a son but he was short lived.
He was cursed that at the age of 16 he would die of snake bite. Coincidentally, before the age of 16, he got married to a girl whose mother Mangala Gauri used to fast. As a result, he had blessed his daughter with a happy life, due to which she could never become a widow. Therefore, Dharampal's daughter-in-law got unbroken good fortune due to the glory of this fast of her mother.

Due to this Dharampal's son attained a long life of 100 years. Since then Mangala Gauri Vrat has been considered as the beginning. For this reason all newly married women perform this puja and observe Gauri Vrat and wish for a long, happy and lasting married life for themselves.
The women who cannot observe the fast, they also at least do the puja. After listening to this story, a married woman gives 16 laddus to her mother-in-law and sister-in-law. After this, she gives the same prasad to the Brahmin as well. After completing this ritual, the devotee performs aarti of the Goddess with 16 wick lamps. On Wednesday, the second day of the fast, the idol of Goddess Mangala Gauri is immersed in a river or pond.

In the end, by folding hands in front of Maa Gauri, one should apologize for all his crimes and for the mistakes made in worship. This fast and puja is observed continuously for 5 years for the happiness of the family. Therefore, according to the scriptures, by observing this Mangala Gauri Vrat according to the rules, the marital happiness of every person increases and the sons and grandchildren also spend their lives happily, such is the glory of this Vrat.
