जब लव कुश बड़े हो गए तब वे दोनों अपने गुरु वाल्मीकि के आदेशानुसार अयोध्या में गए तथा सभी को रामायण कथा सुनायी। अंत में उन्होंने राज दरबार में स्वयं को श्रीराम तथा माता सीता का पुत्र बताया। इसके पश्चात अयोध्या की प्रजा के द्वारा इस पर प्रश्न चिन्ह लगाया गया। श्रीराम ने जब यह सुना तो लोकमत को ध्यान में रखकर उन्होंने सीता को स्वयं यहाँ आकर इसका प्रमाण देने को कहा तथा अपनी शुद्धता की शपथ लेने का आदेश दिया।

माता सीता का भूमि में समाना
माता सीता ने जब यह सुना तो उनका मन कुंठित हो गया। इतने वर्षों से अयोध्या की प्रजा के मत को ध्यान में रखकर वे वन में रह रही थी तथा इसके पश्चात भी उनकी शुद्धता का प्रमाण माँगा जा रहा था। इसलिये उन्होंने इस अपवाद को हमेशा के लिए समाप्त कर देने का निश्चय किया जिससे आगे कभी यह समस्या खड़ी ही न हो।
जब माता सीता राज दरबार में पहुंची तो वहां सभी के सामने उन्हें अपनी शुद्धता की शपथ लेने को कहा गया। यह सुनकर माता सीता ने सभी के सामने शपथ ली कि यदि उन्होंने मन, वचन तथा कर्म से केवल भगवान श्रीराम की ही आराधना की हैं तथा उन्हें ही अपना पति माना हों तो इसी समय यह धरती फट जाये तथा वे उसमे समा जाये।

माता सीता के इतना कहते ही एक जोरदार गर्जना हुई तथा धरती फट कर दो हिस्सों में बंट गयी। उसमे से धरती माँ अवतरित हुई तथा माता सीता को अपने साथ लेकर चली गयी। इस प्रकार माता सीता ने स्वयं के लिए उपजे इस विवाद को हमेशा के लिए शांत कर दिया।
