अर्जुन ने संयम और श्रद्धा से युक्त कथा को सुनकर श्रीकृष्ण से कहा - ""हे मधुसूदन! वैशाख माह की शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी का क्या नाम है तथा उसके उपवास को करने का क्या विधान है? कृपा कर यह सब मुझे विस्तारपूर्वक बताइये।""

श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा - ""हे अर्जुन! मैं एक पौराणिक कथा सुनाता हूँ, जिसे महर्षि वशिष्ठजी ने श्रीरामचन्द्रजी से कहा था। उसे मैं तुमसे कहता हूँ, ध्यानपूर्वक श्रवण करो - एक बार की बात है, श्रीरामजी ने महर्षि वशिष्ठ से कहा - 'हे गुरुश्रेष्ठ! मैंने जनकनन्दिनी सीताजी के वियोग में बहुत कष्ट भोगे हैं, अतः मेरे कष्टों का नाश किस प्रकार होगा? आप मुझे कोई ऐसा व्रत बताने की कृपा करें, जिससे मेरे सभी पाप और कष्ट नष्ट हो जाएँ।' बाबा श्याम जी का सबसे मनमोहक भजन: खाटू वाले शीश के दानी
महर्षि वशिष्ठ ने कहा - 'हे श्रीराम! आपने बहुत उत्तम प्रश्न किया है। आपकी बुद्धि अत्यन्त कुशाग्र और पवित्र है। आपके नाम के स्मरण मात्र से ही मनुष्य पवित्र हो जाता है। आपने लोकहित में यह बड़ा ही उत्तम् प्रश्न किया है। मैं आपको एक एकादशी व्रत का माहात्म्य सुनाता हूँ - वैशाख माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी का नाम मोहिनी एकादशी है। इस एकादशी का उपवास करने से मनुष्य के सभी पाप तथा क्लेश नष्ट हो जाते हैं। इस उपवास के प्रभाव से मनुष्य मोह के जाल से मुक्त हो जाता है। अतः हे राम! दुखी मनुष्य को इस एकादशी का उपवास अवश्य ही करना चाहिये। इस व्रत के करने से मनुष्य के सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं। बाबा श्याम जी का सबसे मनमोहक भजन: श्याम थारो नाम लागे भगता ने प्यारो
अब आप इसकी कथा को श्रद्धापूर्वक सुनिये - प्राचीन समय में सरस्वती नदी के किनारे भद्रावती नाम की एक नगरी बसी हुई थी। उस नगरी में द्युतिमान नामक राजा राज्य करता था। उसी नगरी में एक वैश्य रहता था, जो धन-धान्य से पूर्ण था। उसका नाम धनपाल था। वह अत्यन्त धर्मात्मा तथा नारायण-भक्त था। उसने नगर में अनेक भोजनालय, प्याऊ, कुएँ, तालाब, धर्मशालाएं आदि बनवाये, सड़को के किनारे आम, जामुन, नीम आदि के वृक्ष लगवाए, जिससे पथिकों को सुख मिले। उस वैश्य के पाँच पुत्र थे, जिनमें सबसे बड़ा पुत्र अत्यन्त पापी व दुष्ट था। वह वेश्याओं और दुष्टों की संगति करता था। इससे जो समय बचता था, उसे वह जुआ खेलने में व्यतीत करता था। वह बड़ा ही अधम था और देवता, पितृ आदि किसी को भी नहीं मानता था। अपने पिता का अधिकांश धन वह बुरे व्यसनों में ही उड़ाया करता था। मद्यपान तथा मांस का भक्षण करना उसका नित्य कर्म था। जब काफी समझाने-बुझाने पर भी वह सीधे रास्ते पर नहीं आया तो दुखी होकर उसके पिता, भाइयों तथा कुटुम्बियों ने उसे घर से निकाल दिया और उसकी निन्दा करने लगे। घर से निकलने के बाद वह अपने आभूषणों तथा वस्त्रों को बेच-बेचकर अपना गुजारा करने लगा।

धन नष्ट हो जाने पर वेश्याओं तथा उसके दुष्ट साथियों ने भी उसका साथ छोड़ दिया। जब वह भूख-प्यास से व्यथित हो गया तो उसने चोरी करने का विचार किया और रात्रि में चोरी करके अपना पेट पालने लगा, लेकिन एक दिन वह पकड़ा गया, किन्तु सिपाहियों ने वैश्य का पुत्र जानकर छोड़ दिया। जब वह दूसरी बार पुनः पकड़ा गया, तब सिपाहियों ने भी उसका कोई लिहाज नहीं किया और राजा के सामने प्रस्तुत करके उसे सारी बात बताई। तब राजा ने उसे कारागार में डलवा दिया। कारागार में राजा के आदेश से उसे बहुत कष्ट दिए गये और अन्त में उसे नगर छोड़ने के लिए कहा गया। दुखी होकर उसे नगर छोड़ना पड़ा। बाबा श्याम जी का सबसे मनमोहक भजन: दया कर दो ना
अब वह जंगल में पशु-पक्षियों को मारकर पेट भरने लगा। फिर बहेलिया बन गया और धनुष-बाण से जंगल के निरीह जीवों को मार-मारकर खाने और बेचने लगा। एक बार वह भूख और प्यास से व्याकुल होकर भोजन की खोज में निकला और कौटिन्य मुनि के आश्रम में जा पहुँचा। बाबा श्याम जी का सबसे मनमोहक भजन: कमाल

ऋषि के वचनों को सुन वह बहुत प्रसन्न हुआ और उनकी बतलायी हुई विधि के अनुसार उसने मोहिनी एकादशी का व्रत किया।
