"निर्जला एकादशी व्रत कथा
शौनक आदि अट्ठासी हजार ऋषि-मुनि बड़ी श्रद्धा से इन एकादशियों की कल्याणकारी व पापनाशक रोचक कथाएँ सुनकर आनन्दमग्न हो रहे थे। अब सबने ज्येष्ठ माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी की कथा सुनने की प्रार्थना की। तब सूतजी ने कहा- महर्षि व्यास से एक बार भीमसेन ने कहा - ""हे पितामह! भ्राता युधिष्ठिर, माता कुन्ति, द्रौपदी, अर्जुन, नकुल और सहदेव आदि एकादशी के दिन व्रत करते हैं और मुझे भी एकादशी के दिन अन्न खाने को मना करते हैं। मैं उनसे कहता हूँ कि भाई, मैं भक्तिपूर्वक भगवान की पूजा कर सकता हूँ और दान दे सकता हूँ, किन्तु मैं भूखा नहीं रह सकता।""
इस पर महर्षि व्यास ने कहा - ""हे भीमसेन! वे सही कहते हैं। शास्त्रों में वर्णित है कि एकादशी के दिन अन्न नहीं खाना चाहिये। यदि तुम नरक को बुरा और स्वर्ग को अच्छा समझते हो तो प्रत्येक माह की दोनों एकादशियों को अन्न नहीं खाया करो।
भगवान शंकर का सबसे मीठा भजन: जय जय जय महाकाल
महर्षि व्यास की बात सुन भीमसेन ने कहा - ""हे पितामह, मैं आपसे पहले ही कह चुका हूँ कि मैं एक दिन तो क्या एक समय भी भोजन किये बिना नहीं रह सकता, फिर मेरे लिये पूरे दिन का उपवास करना क्या सम्भव है? मेरे पेट में अग्नि का वास है, जो ज्यादा अन्न खाने पर ही शान्त होती है। यदि मैं प्रयत्न करूँ तो वर्ष में एक एकादशी का व्रत अवश्य कर सकता हूँ, अतः आप मुझे कोई एक ऐसा व्रत बतलाइये, जिसके करने से मुझे स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति हो सके।""
भोले बाबा का सबसे बढ़िया भजन: एक छोटी सी कन्या पार्वती
भीमसेन की बात सुन व्यासजी ने कहा - ""हे पुत्र! बड़े-बड़े ऋषि और महर्षियों ने बहुत-से शास्त्र आदि बनाये हैं। यदि कलियुग में मनुष्य उनका आचरण करे तो अवश्य ही मुक्ति को प्राप्त होता है। उनमें धन बहुत कम खर्च होता है। उनमें से जो पुराणों का सार है, वह यह है कि मनुष्य को दोनों पक्षों की एकादशियों का व्रत करना चाहिये। इससे उन्हें स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति होती है।""
महर्षि व्यास ने कहा - ""हे वायु पुत्र! वृषभ संक्रान्ति और मिथुन संक्रान्ति के बीच में ज्येष्ठ माह की शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी आती है, उसका निर्जल व्रत करना चाहिये। इस एकादशी के व्रत में स्नान और आचमन करते समय यदि मुख में जल चला जाये तो इसका कोई दोष नहीं है, किन्तु आचमन में ६ माशे जल से अधिक जल नहीं लेना चाहिये। इस आचमन से शरीर की शुद्धि हो जाती है। आचमन में ६ माशे से अधिक जल मद्यपान के समान है। इस दिन भोजन नहीं करना चाहिये। भोजन करने से व्रत का नाश हो जाता है। सूर्योदय से सूर्यास्त तक यदि मनुष्य जलपान न करे तो उससे बारह एकादशियों के फल की प्राप्ति होती है। द्वादशी के दिन सूर्योदय से पहले ही उठना चाहिये। इसके पश्चात भूखे ब्राह्मण को भोजन कराना चाहिये। तत्पश्चात स्वयं भोजन करना चाहिये।
मन को मोह लेने वाला भजन: शिव शंकर चले कैलाश
हे भीमसेन! स्वयं भगवान ने मुझसे कहा था कि इस एकादशी का पुण्य सभी तीर्थों और दान के बराबर है। एक दिन निर्जला रहने से मनुष्य पापों से मुक्त हो जाता है। जो मनुष्य निर्जला एकादशी का व्रत करते हैं, उन्हें मृत्यु के समय भयानक यमदूत नहीं दिखाई देते, बल्कि भगवान श्रीहरि के दूत स्वर्ग से आकर उन्हें पुष्पक विमान पर बैठाकर स्वर्ग को ले जाते हैं। संसार में सबसे उत्तम निर्जला एकादशी का व्रत है। अतः यत्नपूर्वक इस एकादशी का निर्जल व्रत करना चाहिये। इस दिन 'ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय', इस मन्त्र का उच्चारण करना चाहिये। इस दिन गौदान करना चाहिये। इस एकादशी को भीमसेनी या पाण्डव एकादशी भी कहते हैं। निर्जल व्रत करने से पहले भगवान का पूजन करना चाहिये और उनसे प्रार्थना करनी चाहिये कि हे प्रभु! आज मैं निर्जल व्रत करता हूँ, इसके दूसरे दिन भोजन करूँगा। मैं इस व्रत को श्रद्धापूर्वक करूँगा। मेरे सब पाप नष्ट हो जाएं। इस दिन जल से भरा हुआ घड़ा वस्त्र आदि से ढककर स्वर्ण सहित किसी सुपात्र को दान करना चाहिये। इस व्रत के अन्तराल में जो मनुष्य स्नान, तप आदि करते हैं, उन्हें करोड़ पल स्वर्णदान का फल प्राप्त होता है। जो मनुष्य इस दिन यज्ञ, होम आदि करते हैं, उसके फल का तो वर्णन भी नहीं किया जा सकता। इस निर्जला एकादशी के व्रत के पुण्य से मनुष्य विष्णुलोक को जाता है। जो मनुष्य इस दिन अन्न खाते हैं, उनको चाण्डाल समझना चाहिये। वे अन्त में नरक में जाते हैं। ब्रह्म हत्यारे, मद्यमान करने वाले, चोरी करने वाले, गुरु से ईर्ष्या करने वाले, झूठ बोलने वाले भी इस व्रत को करने से स्वर्ग के भागी बन जाते हैं।
शिव जी की सबसे मनमोहक आरती: ॐ जय शिव ओंकारा
हे भीमसेन! जो पुरुष या स्त्री इस व्रत को श्रद्धापूर्वक करते हैं, उनके निम्नलिखित कर्म हैं, उन्हें सर्वप्रथम विष्णु भगवान का पूजन करना चाहिये। तदुपरान्त गौदान करना चाहिये। इस दिन ब्राह्मणों को दक्षिणा देनी चाहिये। निर्जला के दिन अन्न, वस्त्र, छत्र आदि का दान करना चाहिये। जो मनुष्य इस कथा का प्रेमपूर्वक श्रवण करते हैं तथा पठन करते हैं वे भी स्वर्ग के अधिकारी हो जाते हैं।""
कथा-सार
अपनी कमजोरियों को अपने गुरुजनों व परिवार के बड़ों से कदापि नहीं छुपाना चाहिये। उन पर विश्वास रखते हुए भक्त को चाहिये कि वह अपना कष्ट उन्हें बताये, ताकि वे उसका कोई उचित उपाय कर सकें। उपाय पर श्रद्धा और विश्वासपूर्वक अमल करना चाहिये।"

On this Maharishi Vyas said - ""O Bhimsen! They are right. It is described in the scriptures that food should not be eaten on the day of Ekadashi. If you consider hell as bad and heaven as good, then do not eat food on both the Ekadashis of every month.

After listening to Maharishi Vyas, Bhimsen said - ""O grandfather, I have already told you that I cannot live without food even for a day, then is it possible for me to fast for the whole day? Fire resides in my stomach, which calms down only after eating more food. If I try, I can definitely observe one Ekadashi fast in a year, so you tell me such a fast, by doing which I can attain heaven.
After listening to Bhimsen, Vyasji said - ""O son! Big sages and great sages have prepared many scriptures etc. If a man practices them in Kaliyuga, he definitely attains liberation. Very little money is spent on them. The essence of the Puranas is that a man should fast on the Ekadashis of both the fortnights. By this they get heaven.

Maharishi Vyas said - "" O son of Vayu! Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Jyestha month falls between Vrishabh Sankranti and Mithun Sankranti, Nirjal Vrat should be observed for that. During the fast of this Ekadashi, if there is water in the mouth while bathing and doing Aachaman, then it is not a fault, but in Aachaman, water should not be taken more than 6 months. The body gets purified by this aachaman. Water more than 6 months in Aachaman is like drinking. Food should not be taken on this day. Eating destroys the fast. If a person does not take refreshments from sunrise to sunset, then he gets the fruits of twelve Ekadashis. One should get up before sunrise on the day of Dwadashi. After this the hungry Brahmin should be fed. After that one should eat himself.

Hey Bhimsen! God Himself told me that the virtue of this Ekadashi is equal to all pilgrimages and charity. By remaining waterless for a day, a man becomes free from sins. The people who fast on Nirjala Ekadashi do not see the terrible Yamdoots at the time of death, but the messengers of Lord Sri Hari come from heaven and take them to heaven by sitting on a Pushpak plane. Nirjala Ekadashi fast is the best in the world. Therefore, one should do waterless fast on this Ekadashi with great effort. On this day 'Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevay', this mantra should be chanted. Cow donation should be done on this day. This Ekadashi is also known as Bhimseni or Pandava Ekadashi. Before fasting without water, one should worship God and pray to him that O Lord! Those people who perform Yagya, Home etc. on this day, the fruits of that cannot even be described. By virtue of fasting on this Nirjala Ekadashi man goes to Vishnulok. Those people who eat food on this day, they should be considered Chandal. They go to hell in the end. Brahma killers, drunkards, thieves, envious of Guru, liars also become a part of heaven by observing this fast.

Dakshina should be given to Brahmins on this day. Food, clothes, umbrella etc. should be donated on the day of Nirjala. Those people who listen and read this story with love, they also become entitled to heaven.
Synopsis
Never hide your weaknesses from your teachers and family elders. Keeping faith in them, the devotee should tell them about his suffering, so that they can take some appropriate remedy for it. The remedy should be followed with devotion and faith.
