पांडवों की जन्म कथा
पांडव हस्तिनापुर के राजा पांडु और उनकी दो पत्नियों कुंती व माद्री के पांच शक्तिशाली और कुशल पुत्र थे। महाभारत में युधिष्ठिर, भीम, अर्जुन, नकुल, और सहदेव – ये पांच पांडव सबसे अधिक सराहना के पात्र रहे हैं।
एक बार राजा पांडु अपनी पत्नियों के साथ शिकार करने के लिए जंगल में गए। राजा पांडु को वहां एक हिरण का जोड़ा दिखाई दिया, जो एक-दूसरे से बेहद प्यार करता था।

जब राजा की नजर उस जोड़े पर पड़ी, तो उन्होंने तीर निकालकर नर हिरण को निशाना बनाया और तीर छोड़ दिया। तीर सीधा हिरण की छाती में जाकर लगा। वह हिरण कोई और नहीं, बल्कि हिरण के वेश में ऋषि किदंबा थे। उन्होंने पांडु को श्राप दिया कि वह जब भी किसी महिला के करीब जाएंगे, तभी उनकी मृत्यु हो जाएगी। पांडु ने ऋषि किदंबा से क्षमा मांगी, लेकिन तब तक वो मर चुके थे।
श्राप के कारण पांडु ने राज्य त्याग दिया और अपन पत्नियों से निवेदन किया कि वो वापस राज्य लौट जाएं, लेकिन उन्होंने मना कर दिया। कुंती और माद्री जंगल में राजा पांडु के साथ ही रहने लगीं। उस समय उनकी कोई संतान नहीं थी।

तब कुंती ने अपने पती को बताया कि उन्हें ऋषि दुर्वासा से वरदान मिला था कि वह किसी भी भगवान को बुला कर उनसे एक शिशु को प्राप्त कर सकती है। दुर्वासा द्वारा कुंती को दिए गए मंत्रों के उपयोग के माध्यम से उसने यम यानी धर्म के देवता का आह्वान किया, जिससे उन्होंने युधिष्ठिर को जन्म दिया। उसने फिर पवन देव से भीम, इंद्र देव से अर्जुन के रूप में एक और पुत्र प्राप्त किया। इस प्रकार उसके तीन पुत्र हो गए, लेकिन माद्री के एक भी पुत्र नहीं था, तब कुंती ने माद्री को भी मंत्र विद्या सिखाई।
मंत्रों की मदद से माद्री ने अश्विनी कुमारों को बुलाया, जिन्होंने उसे नकुल और सहदेव पुत्र के रूप में दिए। इस प्रकार, पांचों पांडवों का जन्म हुआ। देवताओं से प्राप्त सभी पांडवों को देवताओं की तरह ही दिव्य गुण प्राप्त हुए थे।

When the king caught sight of the couple, he took out an arrow and aimed at the male deer and released the arrow. The arrow went straight into the deer's chest. That deer was none other than the sage Kidamba in the guise of a deer. He cursed Pandu that he would die whenever he went close to a woman. Pandu apologized to Sage Kidamba, but by then he was dead.
Due to the curse, Pandu renounced the kingdom and requested his wives to return to the kingdom, but they refused. Kunti and Madri started living with King Pandu in the forest. He had no children at that time.

Kunti then told her husband that she had received a boon from sage Durvasa that she could invoke any god and get a child from him. Through the use of mantras given to Kunti by Durvasa, she invoked Yama, the god of righteousness, from whom she gave birth to Yudhishthira. She then got another son in the form of Bhima from Pawan Dev, Arjuna from Indra Dev. Thus he had three sons, but Madri did not have a single son, then Kunti taught Mantra Vidya to Madri as well.
With the help of mantras, Madri summoned the Ashwini Kumaras, who gave her Nakula and Sahadeva as sons. Thus, the five Pandavas were born. All the Pandavas received from the deities had received divine qualities just like the deities.
