ऋषि पंचमी व्रत कथा
हिन्दू पंचांग के अनुसार भाद्रपद मास में आने वाली शुक्ल पंचमी के दिन ऋषि पंचमी का यह व्रत किया जाता है। इस दिन सप्त ऋषियों की पूजा की जाती है।
एक समय की बात है, विदर्भ देश में उत्तंक नाम के एक ब्राह्मण रहा करते थे। उनकी भार्या एक पतिव्रता स्त्री थी, जिनका नाम सुशीला था। उस ब्राह्मण और ब्राह्मणी के एक पुत्र और पुत्री थे। जब पुत्री विवाह योग्य हुई तो उन्होंने एक योग्य वर देख कर उसका विवाह कर दिया। दुर्भाग्य से विवाह के कुछ समय बाद ही उस कन्या के पति का देहांत हो गया और वह विधवा हो गयी। वह दुखी ब्राह्मण दंपत्ति अपनी कन्या के साथ गंगा के किनारे एक कुटिया बनाकर रहने लगे।

एक दिन वह कन्या सो रही थी। सोते समय कन्या के पुरे शरीर पर कीड़े पड़ गए। यह सारी बात कन्या ने अपनी मां से कही। अपनी बेटी की यह दशा देख ब्राह्मणी ने अपने पति से पूछा- स्वामि! मेरी कन्या की यह स्थिति होने के पीछे क्या कारण है?
कन्या के ब्राह्मण पिता ने समाधि धारण कर यह पता लगाया की पूर्वजन्म में भी उनकी पुत्री ब्राह्मण पुत्री थी। इस कन्या ने रजस्वला (महावारी) के समय पूजा के बर्तनों को स्पर्श कर लिया था और फिर इस जन्म में लोगों के देखा- देख ऋषि पंचमी का व्रत भी नहीं किया। जिस कारण कन्या के शरीर पर कीड़े पड़ गए ।

धार्मिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार रजस्वला यानि महावारी के समय तीन दिन तक महिला, चाण्डालिनी, ब्रह्मघातिनी तथा धोबिन के बराबर अपवित्र होती है। फिर चौथे दिन स्नान करने के बाद ही वह शुद्ध है। इस जन्म में भी यदि यह ऋषि पंचमी का यह व्रत रखे तो इसके सारे दुःख समाप्त हो जाएंगे और अगले जन्म में इसे अखंड सौभाग्य की प्राप्ति होगी।
पिता के कहने के अनुसार उस कन्या ने विधि-विधान से ऋषि पंचमी का पूजन और व्रत किया। श्रद्धापूर्वक किये गए इस व्रत के प्रभाव वह सभी दुःख-तकलीफों से मुक्त हो गई। इसके साथ अगले जन्म में उसे सुख-सौभाग्य की प्राप्ति हुई।

According to the Hindu calendar, this fast of Rishi Panchami is observed on the day of Shukla Panchami in the month of Bhadrapada. Seven sages are worshiped on this day.
Once upon a time, there used to be a Brahmin named Uttanka in the country of Vidarbha. His wife was a virtuous woman, whose name was Sushila. That Brahmin and Brahmin had a son and a daughter. When the daughter became marriageable, he married her after seeing a suitable groom. Unfortunately, shortly after the marriage, the girl's husband died and she became a widow. That sad Brahmin couple started living with their daughter by building a cottage on the banks of the Ganges.

One day that girl was sleeping. While sleeping, the whole body of the girl was covered with insects. The girl told all this to her mother. Seeing this condition of her daughter, Brahmin asked her husband - Swami! What is the reason behind this condition of my daughter?
The Brahmin father of the girl, wearing a samadhi, came to know that his daughter was a Brahmin daughter in her previous birth also. This girl had touched the utensils of worship at the time of Rajaswala (menstruation) and then in this birth she did not even observe the fast of Rishi Panchami in view of people. Due to which insects fell on the girl's body.

According to religious beliefs, for three days at the time of Rajaswala i.e. menstruation, women are as impure as Chandalini, Brahmaghatini and Dhobin. Then on the fourth day only after bathing he is pure. Even in this birth, if this Rishi observes this fast of Panchami, then all his sorrows will end and he will get unbroken good fortune in the next life.
According to her father's advice, that girl worshiped Rishi Panchami according to the rules and regulations and observed a fast. Due to the effect of this fast done with devotion, she became free from all sorrows and troubles. With this, he got happiness and good fortune in the next life.
