शनिदेव की कथा
शनिदेव साक्षात रुद्र हैं। उनकी शरीर क्रांति इन्द्रनील मणि के समान है। शनि भगवान के शीश पर स्वर्ण मुकुट, गले में माला तथा शरीर पर नीले रंग के वस्त्र सुशोभित हैं। शनिदेव गिद्ध पर सवार रहते हैं। हाथों में क्रमश: धनुष, बाण, त्रिशूल और वरमुद्रा धारण करते हैं। वे भगवान सूर्य तथा छाया (सवर्णा) के पुत्र हैं। वे क्रूर ग्रह माने जाते हैं। इनकी दृष्टि में क्रूरता का मुख्य कारण उनकी पत्नी का श्राप है।

ब्रह्मपुराण के अनुसार बाल्यकाल से ही शनिदेव भगवान श्रीकृष्ण के अनन्य भक्त थे। वे भगवान श्रीकृष्ण के अनुराग में निमग्न रहा करते थे। युवावस्था में उनके पिताश्री ने उनका विवाह चित्ररथ की कन्या से करवा दिया। उनकी पत्नी सती, साध्वी एवं परम तेजस्विनी थी। एक रात्रि वह ऋतु स्नान कर पुत्र प्राप्ति की इच्छा लिए शनिदेव के पास पहुंची, पर देवता तो भगवान श्रीकृष्ण के ध्यान में लीन थे। उन्हें बाह्य संसार की सुधि ही नहीं थी। उनकी पत्नी प्रतीक्षा करके थक गई। उनका ऋतकाल निष्फल हो गया। इसलिए उन्होंने क्रुद्ध होकर शनिदेव को श्राप दे दिया कि आज से जिसे तुम देखोगे, वह नष्ट हो जाएगा।

ध्यान टूटने पर शनिदेव ने अपनी पत्नी को मनाया। उनकी धर्मपत्नी को अपनी भूल पर पश्चाताप हुआ किंतु श्राप के प्रतिकार की शक्ति उनमें नहीं थी, तभी से शनिदेव अपना सिर नीचा करके रहने लगे, क्योंकि वे नहीं चाहते थे कि किसी का अनिष्ट हो।

ज्योतिष शास्त्र के अनुसार शनि ग्रह यदि कहीं रोहिणी भेदन कर दे, तो पृथ्वी पर 12 वर्षों का घोर दुर्भिक्ष पड़ जाए और प्राणियों का बचना ही कठिन हो जाए। शनि ग्रह जब रोहिणी भेदन कर बढ़ जाता है, तब यह योग आता है। यह योग महाराज दशरथ के समय में आने वाला था। जब ज्योतिषियों ने महाराज दशरथ को बताया कि यदि शनि का योग आ जाएगा तो प्रजा अन्न-जल के बिना तड़प-तड़पकर मर जाएगी।

प्रजा को इस कष्ट से बचाने हेतु महाराज दशरथ अपने रथ पर सवार होकर नक्षत्र मंडल में पहुंचे। पहले तो उन्होंने नित्य की भांति शनिदेव को प्रणाम किया, इसके पश्चात क्षत्रिय धर्म के अनुसार उनसे युद्ध करते हुए उन पर संहारास्त्र का संधान किया। शनिदेव, महाराज दशरथ की कर्तव्यनिष्ठा से अति प्रसन्न हुए और उनसे कहा वर मांगो- महाराज दशरथ ने वर मांगा कि जब तक सूर्य, नक्षत्र आदि विद्यमान हैं, तब तक आप संकटभेदन न करें। शनिदेव ने उन्हें वर देकर संतुष्ट किया।

भगवान शनिदेव के अधिदेवता प्रजापति ब्रह्मा और प्रत्यधि देवता यम हैं। इसका वर्ण कृष्ण, वाहन गिद्ध तथा रथ लोहे का बना है। शनिदेव एक राशि में 30-30 महीने रहते हैं। वे मकर और कुंभ राशि के स्वामी हैं तथा इनकी महादशा 19 वर्ष की होती है। इनकी शांति के लिए मृत्युंजय जप, नीलम धारण तथा ब्राह्मण को तिल, भैंस, लोहा, तेल, काला वस्त्र, नीलम, काली गौ, जूता, कस्तूरी और सुवर्ण का दान देना चाहिए।

One night, after bathing in the season, she reached Shani Dev with the desire to have a son, but the gods were engrossed in the meditation of Lord Krishna. He didn't care about the outside world at all. His wife got tired of waiting. His fasting went in vain. That's why he got angry and cursed Shani Dev that from today onwards whoever you see will be destroyed.
