श्री कृष्ण ने गोवर्धन पर्वत क्यों उठाया?
गोकुल के निवासी देवराज इंद्र से बहुत भयभीत रहते थे। उन्हें लगता था कि देवराज इंद्र ही धरती पर बारिश करते हैं। नगरी के सभी निवासी इंद्र देव को प्रसन्न करने के लिए उनकी बहुत पूजा किया करते थे, ताकि गोकुल पर इंद्रदेव की कृपा बनी रहे। एक बार श्री कृष्ण ने गोकुल वासियों को समझाया कि इन्द्रदेव की पूजा में अपना समय बर्बाद करने से अच्छा है कि तुम लोग गाय-भैंसों की पूजा करो। ये तुम्हें दूध देती हैं। ये पशु सम्मान के अधिकारी हैं।
गोकुलवासी श्री कृष्ण की बात जरूर मानते थे। उन्होंने इंद्रदेव की जगह पशुओं को मान-सम्मान देना शुरू कर दिया। जब इन्द्रदेव ने देखा कि अब कोई भी उनकी पूजा नहीं कर रहा है, तो वह इस अपमान से तिलमिला उठे। इन्द्रदेव ने गुस्से में आकर गोकुलवासियों को सबक सिखाने का निर्णय लिया। भगवान इंद्र ने बादलों को आदेश दिया कि गोकुल नगरी तब तक तुम बरसते रहो, जब तक वह डूब न जाए। इन्द्रदेव का आदेश पाकर बादलों ने गोकुल नगरी पर बरसना शुरू कर दिया।

गोकुल नगर में ऐसी बारिश कभी नहीं पड़ी थी। चारों ओर पानी ही पानी नजर आने लगा। पूरे नगर में बाढ़ आ गई। गोकुलवासी घबरा कर श्री कृष्ण के पास पहुंचे। श्री कृष्ण ने सभी गोकुलवासियों को अपने पीछे चलने का आदेश दिया। गोकुलवासी अपनी गाय और भैंस साथ लेकर श्री कृष्ण के पीछे-पीछे चल दिए। श्री कृष्ण गोवर्धन नाम के पर्वत पर पहुंचे और उस पर्वत को अपने हाथ की सबसे छोटी ऊंगली पर उठा लिया। सभी गोकुल निवासी उस पर्वत के नीचे आकर खड़े हो गए। श्री कृष्ण का यह चमत्कार देखकर भगवान इंद्र भी भयभीत हो गए। उन्होंने वर्षा बंद कर दी। यह देखकर गोकुल वासी खुश हो गए और अपने-अपने घर को लौट गए। इस तरह श्री कृष्ण ने अपनी शक्ति से गोकुलवासियों की जान बचाई।

Shri Krishna reached the mountain named Govardhan and lifted that mountain on the smallest finger of his hand. All the residents of Gokul came and stood under that mountain. Seeing this miracle of Shri Krishna, even Lord Indra got scared. He stopped the rain. Seeing this, the people of Gokul became happy and returned to their homes. In this way Shri Krishna saved the lives of Gokul residents with his power.
